I would like to know how to do these things..

I am as frustrated as anyone can get ..of course i am a newbie to Digi sscrapbooking. However i got have photoshop elements 10.I am not new to the program, i am pretty good with it. Lately been making more of my own papers and trying to do elements/embellishments. I know it's easier just to download the free stuff LOL but i kinda wanna learn to do my own also.

So how the heck do you make Ribbon(s) in PSE10? Anybody know? Is there a tutorial? I love tutorials btw, they are fantastic!!! Specially the ones on here!

Also i would like to know how to make buttons, tags things like that, okay well i would like to know how to make elements and omg! OVERLAYS! How do i get all those cool patterns for overlays? I know how to make Plaids, stripes and sorta can do polka dots. But i'd like to know how to do swirls and things like that. DO i need to use my photoshop brushes to make the pattern then use that pattern fill to make the "page" and the save as a png so it's transparent??

I know i am scatter brained and all over the page with my questions! Sorry!! but any helps is appreciated!!

THANKS!

From,
Sara

Sara: Although I'm not a designer, I can send you to the part of our website that will help you out the most. Please see here. I think the ladies over there will be able to help you or at the very least direct you to the proper tutorials you need if not already existent in our PS and PSE section of the site.
Have a great Day! smiley

There are lots of styles of ribbons which have very different methods of creation. If there is a certain kind of ribbon you're interested in making, please leave a link here and I'll do my best to make a tutorial.

Hum... let me try...
Ribbons: You take a picture with your camera and them extract it.
Buttons: You scan them (because it´s easier to scan than photograph) and them extract;

Using photoshop brushes to make fancy patterns is one of the ways. Experiment doing exactly like you said...

ohh geez.. all i had to was open my eyes for the photoshop section RFLOL HA! thanks!!!

Marisa: for the buttons and ribbons.. i just want to know, is there any other way OTHER than scanning them and extracting to make them? I dont know what style i like or want or want to make... I guess i am bit lazy sometimes and having to scan a bow or a button is a lot of work to me..LOL I just thought if there was a another way and oh i don't have a scanner LOL. smiley

I guess also i could try and google it and search around that is infact how i have found some of the best tutorials for making things in photoshop elements.

thanks guys for the info!! so far everyone on here has been super big help!

YES! thank you Lorien! i guess i just need to use my head and do the patterns the way i know, since that is how i learned and i know there is many many ways to do it but to me it's the easiest!

thank you!

For me it´s the easiest too Sara. And, oh, well, I tried to make the buttons 100% at photoshop thinking the same way as you... till I NEEDED to scan a button during a design class... and I realised it´s far easier for me to scan and extract. To extract the buttons, specially, is super easy, as they are round, so you can use the selection tool in circle shape.

Also, Jenn "suggarbutt" designs has a tutorial for making bows at photoshop. The link is expired, but, when people requests, she puts her tutorials on air again. And she´s also a member of this site. Maybe you want to contact her and tell that I recomended her tutorial...? Her profile on DigitalScrapbook.com is here, and there is her blog and her Facebook there.

I have these ribbon templates, which are basically a simple ribbon template that I've added a pattern to. Here's a kit, but you can of course download just one to see what I'm talking about:

cool thanks Lorien, i will take a look at her stuff...

Marisa: cool yeah i have seen the ribbon templates. If i have to i will resort to those smiley

Thanks for all your help guys!!

Marisa you ribbon templates are just wonderful. In my class at SNP I actually scanned a bow....it was a small ribbon that I tied to a button and that allowed it to not be smushed when I close the lid. I then extracted it. I tried to photograph but it is really hard to have the ribbons not be blurry. I had the same problem with the buttons and photography - believe me I spent about six hours over three days taking photographs and it took my back a week to recover from the strain after that. In about 20 minutes I had about 12 buttons scanned and good enough quality to be used as CU items.

oh u know what i guess i could also try taking the photograph of a ribbon and then extract ha! lorien..sorry it just now clicked in my brain..hmmm i do not have a scanner..soo i gotta use what i got.

thanks tho!! you guys been so much help!!!

i also just learned that there is a photoshop plug in that can CURL the ribbons!! omg!!

Sara...I think it is amazing the things you can do in Photoshop. I am taking a six level course to really learn how to use all the features in Photoshop.. smiley

holy cow! 6 levels??!! i USED to use it for editing photos, i still do that also but i wanted to get into digital scrapbooking to make greeting cards!

i think i am going to need a bigger hard drive, between all the actions and plugins. LOL

Sara, when I upgraded to CS6 from PSE10 maybe three months ago I didn't understand a thing about it. Since then I have started with a beginner class with four weeks to it although you can do it faster. Then there is another beginner, two intermediate and two advanced courses. It will take me about six more months. I took a break for the last six weeks to take a "design mentoring" class because I want to participate in blog trains but I want my product to be of quality. Looking forward to getting back to my Photoshop class to learn all the particulars of Photoshop. You pretty much do it on your own but have an instructor whenever you need to ask questions. She is really helpful too.

@Sara: glad you liked the advice... wow, I never saw a plugin that curls ribbon... sounds really interesting.

@Janet: do you iknow what happened so your bow didn´t photographed right? It was focus issue, light issue...? I could never take good photographs at my old house, because I didn´t have any spots with the right light - on this one is a bit better, and, luckly, one of the spots where is possible to take nice pictures is on my craft room. I took pictures of two bows for the SNP class, the first past QC with no problem, although was a hard one to take pictures, and the second, which seemed easier at first, was really hard, but after sharpening 4 or 5 pictures and then extract the best one it passed QC... Unfortunatelly, all the links I know that teach how to make good pictures are in Portuguese, so they will be of no use if I share smiley

i self taught myself photoshop, i starrted with the CS5 i learned i hated ps illustrator right away. creative suite is fun, but i was stuck to PSE and when i was ready i ended up buying PSE10 for dirt cheap price (brand new) off amazon.Best investment ever made! I have so much fun with it and i use it more then i use anything else..although facebook has a close tie with my photoshop, i tend to use them both all day everyday! LOL but PSE sure makes editing photos a snap! i don't need lightroom either! then when i am done with my photos i put them on flickr.

but now for graphics like digital scrapbooking, pse makes that a cinch also! it's really not hard to use at all..

oh yeah the plug in is this http://www.vizros.com/vp.html

it works ( or so they say from another scrapbook forum) with Photoshop and can be used with photoshop elements.. and u just use the curl filter.yep i am going home tonight after work to load it and use it..

i take it back that was not free..

smiley

Lorien, I tried to photograph inside, outside, with light, without light, at different times of the day, used a Cowboy Studio 24in Photo Soft Box Light tent etc! Also tried macro, auto zoom, and manually to get something decent! Really, had no luck until I took out my photo scanner. Oh and I took a seminar on manual shooting three months ago and had pulled out my notes on that but to no avail. And I was using my new Canon T4i I just didn't have luck with it! Had much better luck with my photo scanner!

Janet,
Who are you taking your classes with?

@Mary well, my brother lives in Reedley, California (near Fresno) and his kids gave him the class through a local photography studio for his birthday last year. The photographer periodically does a class in Reedley and he hires professional models for the live shooting. It was a couple hours in the classroom and then a quick lunch (he provided) and then three or four hours of practice. It was a great class but as with almost everything you need to keep practicing. One thing I definitely learned was the ability to be be very agile to get some great shots. I have to say this old body wasn't loving it! I think young people have greater ability to moving around for fantastic shots. Halfway through I had to stop sitting/kneeling/jumping up and down from the ground because my back just couldn't take it. It was an awesome opportunity. I do know that I follow the Clickin Mom's site and they give classes quite regularly. It is a bit costly but it is run by a bunch of photographers who provide hints and "tricks" in photography. As a member you can even submit a photograph for critique. Haven't had much time to be fully involved but even following their blog gives you a lot of info that will help just about anyone in their skills. I have linked it here. Oh, and one of my favorite things on their blogs is where they show you what is in a photographer's camera bag. I actually used it to determine a couple extra lenses for my camera!

hey got another question! what is the backing that people use to show their elements on for download and etc, its the preview card? .. something card??!! i know i saw it but can't think of it..

Do you mean an Element Preview? I think it is really just that simple...

Maybe not exactly what you had in mind for ribbon... this tutorial is for the folded ribbon like the ones you see for breast cancer and other causes. This link was posted in another thread for element sizes, but I visited many pages on the site and came across this tute (It's about halfway down the page):Humbug Graphics Galore

I got a action that makes bows and ribbons that is CU also.. thanks!! smiley

Sara, What is the action that makes bows an ribbons? Is it the one you gave a link and referred to before vizros? Does it work with Photoshop Elements 10? Thanks

Sara, an others that may be interested. I had been to Humbug a long time ago and just decided to visit again since Susie mentioned her site. She has 158 Tutorials and I could not find a bow tutorial but I started going through her list and she has lots of tutorials that I was interested in and maybe you will too. I found the following and then decided I better just suggest everyone check for themselves. If you just go down on the right side you will see a list of her tutorials and you can pick which you want instead of going through all. Hope this helps some that are trying to learn.

Once you get one simple button or ribbon you like, wouldn't it be possible to make a bunch by using the clipping feature in Photoshop? Clip the pattern paper to the button or ribbon and it changes to match what you are using on the page? I'm still trying to remember to do that and have just started trying to clip patterns to fonts. Don't even know if that's the right terminology.
