Jordan and I have been thinking about what would make the gallery more valuable. What makes makes a gallery good, and how do we encourage that?
Due to time constraints I find that I don't have a lot of time to browse. A particular LO actually catches my eye and go to look at it. I am then interested so I would like to be able to look at all of that scrapper's LOs at that time. Perhaps if the scrapper would add their forum name to the "tags" then one could just click on that to see the rest of their layouts. It would be nice if there were credits for the kit and the designer spelled out vice it just being "tagged."
I like galleries where most of people link to the resources they use, or at least give some kind of credit. And, to be sincere, although I am also an hybrid/paper/scrap decor kind of them, this kind of work bother me on digi galleries, unless it´s clearly statet that that session is for cards, hybrid LOs, scrap decor, ATCs, smashs, etsc.
What I like about PixelScrapper's gallery is that when I look at it I can just see a bunch of thumb nails and see what catches my eye. And look more closely at that. So I really like that they are displayed and not within a forum. Other places I have been have them in a forum and you have to click on each thing to see the photo. It takes a lot of time and you spend a lot of time on things you don't really interest me at the moment.
In my opinion I like to know that they're all digital when I look at them. If they are other projects, yet still digital, I know that I can tweak them to suit my own needs.
I don't mind looking at other types of projects like hybrid or paper or whatever but not at all the same time as digital stuff. But I'd like them to have their own section or gallery.
I like the way the gallery is set up now, all digital, latest post at the top. One option that would improve it for me, being lazy, would be that when the thumbnail is clicked on we are sent to the designer's gallery. Once there it would be nice to be able to move through that gallery by clicking a "forward" arrow or some such.
If you opt to include other categories, such as hybrid, cards, etc., IMO they should each have a separate gallery.
I like your ideas, Harriet
I agree with Harriet as well. Moving through specific galleries would be a great option. It would also be nice to be able to separate digital vs. hybrid vs. cards etc.
I would suggest that viewers receive more community points for providing comments to a layout. Currently it is a one-point action, I believe. Perhaps making the Gallery more valuable would be to earn store points for providing feedback on layouts.
If we did something like Sunny suggests. I would just like to say... It needs to be based on the length of a comment for any extra points. Otherwise, you might just end up with a bunch of new people who don't really participate with us over here in the forums but just want to get to their higher DL credits per day so they go through the gallery quickly and say "nice layout" on the first 50 or so layouts just to earn their points...
I guess the reason I say by length is because then, they would have to really study the layout up close and say something more they liked about it... being more specific to encourage the owner of the layout. I know sometimes when I just get nice layout comments vs... I really like your photo and how you used xyz element or color or your journaling is a lovely story, etc. It encourages me to share my layouts more.... kind of like the critique challenge you have going on.
I too really like Harriet's suggestions as far as clicking through with more ease, and going directly to a users gallery to look at all their layouts with ease.
I also agree with Lorien above in comment # 3 about all the different kinds of things being included. So, I hope personally you opt for extra sub-galleries. My reasoning is not everyone that finds pixel scrapper has always been a digital scrapper and if we went to be a resource for the entire artistic community, we need to have a place for them to feel included to learn and grow in the digital world. And what if for them that is through cards, hybrid scrapping or even home decor (like digital prints, subway art). In the last couple years, I've made more stuff IRL (physical, hybrid or decor) than I have digital scrapping just because computer time is hard to find and/or trying to balance my real life with my online time. So it would be nice to have a place to share those things with my friends here.
Great ideas! We already have thoughts to create a "layout critique" club, which we've been doing small scale on the blog, which we hope will encourage people who participate to leave more valuable feedback and to improve their layouts!
Otherwise, you might just end up with a bunch of new people who don't really participate with us over here in the forums but just want to get to their higher DL credits per day so they go through the gallery quickly and say "nice layout" on the first 50 or so layouts just to earn their points...
If we had a system to comments we receive on our galleries, they could have extra points when the author hearted it. Then we could just ask people to heart only really useful comments. It´s just a weird idea that passed by...
Well I still would like to deal with the other kinds of crafts in the same way we deal with photography now: Create sub-forums for people to share, in a way they host what they´d like to share on flikr, imgur, Picasa, Dropbox, etc, so, the gallery dont lose its focus, i.e, pixel scrapping.
I agree that it's nice to be able to flip through an individual member's gallery. Sometimes I find someone's style I really like or want to emulate, and so I want to look at all that person has done thus far. Janet's idea about adding our names to the tag section might be a good way to work with that.
I love the gallery as it is, the thumbnails are the right size to catch my eye (or not) and click through. I do have the same 'problem' as some other ladies. If I like someone's style I would like to flip through their gallery. Right now, I click on their profile pic and then their gallery, but it would be a lot faster if the gallery button would be on the same page as the layout is (there's already a link to their blog/FB/Flickr etc, why not add the gallery link there?). I like the idea to go to the personal gallery once you clicked the thumbnail in the home-gallery. But I actually like the current 'similar layout' option better, it makes me click through and lose track of time
I would like to see paper layouts, but in a section of it's own please. I have spent some frustrating hours trying to scraplift magnificent shadowing in photoshop before I realized they were never done digitally in the first place, lol!
Making more DC for comments would not add relevant comments, only more. I'd rather read comments people really wanted to make, rather than reading more that are just saying 'wow' or 'good LO' to get more points.
I didn't even realize we got download credits for making comments in the gallery... Sometimes I leave comments, sometimes I just "heart" the ones I really like
I would like the option to scroll forward or backward through a persons "larger" image gallery with a button.
I do love the fact that from a kit we can see layouts! That was one of the things I really noticed earlier and LOVE!
I think having a notification to when there is a comment to a layout would be a great addition, I think it was talked of before. This would help us find those comments, and be able to respond back. I've lost some of the comments on mine, and honestly just quit looking. opps my bad.
perhaps including on a mouse over in the thumbnail gallery things like 1) how many heart an item has, or 2) the first of the lastest comment. Though this might be horribly difficult for Jordan to pull off. you Jordan...I really don't want to take advantage of your skills! I just envy them, because you've done some great "detail" work for the site, and it's helps make the website stand out! I really haven't frequented other forums/websites for the long term, because they DIDN'T stand out like PS!!!!!!
Well, just a few of the ideas I've come up with since "trolling" this question 4 days ago. (trolling - there but not commenting lol....I wasn't exactly sure what avenue you were asking about, or what things I could add for NEW ideas because it's set up already so much better then some of the sites I've seen.)
Also have liked the fact that non-members can see a layout, before or without joining.
