Making an Element Appear on Top and Behind

Some elements looks more realistic if you wrap them around another element. In this tutorial I will show you how to delete part of a paper clip so that it looks like it's actually clipping a photo.

great tutorial! One trick I learned along the way of selecting objects if you ctrl+click on the thumbnail of the layer it will select the object on that layer. That'll save you a couple steps of selecting and inverse selecting. Great job!!

Great tip! Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I am always trying to learn new ones. Now if I can just keep all the tips in my brain for when I need them!!!

I saw this tutorial on YouTube first and tried it a few times and it wasn't working. (I was trying to make lunch and run back and forth). Finally I concentrated on it and found I had forgotten to do the ALT key part...duh!! Works like a charm! Thanks so much Marisa!!

Here's another tutorial how to add a layer so something looks pinned: http://scrapmatters.com/wordpress/2013/01/08/learning-matters-7/

That is so coooooooooool,, I have been using my eraser to do this, didn't think of the lasso, duh!

So THAT'S how you edit a selection! I felt like there should have been a way, but never knew it was as simple as holding down "alt" and grabbing the lasso tool.

Usually, I use layer masks to hide portions of an image - adding a layer mask to the layer with my element on it, then using the brush tool to paint black the areas of the mask I want hidden. (I get a little obsessed with being as non-destructive as I can. This is born from a constant paranoia of screwing up and not being able to undo it!) Unfortunately, that method is less exact, since I've been free-handing everything - adjusting the selection will totally fix that, I'm so excited! smiley

And Jessica - thanks for the tip on selecting what's on a layer, that's such a great little time-saver! (Anything to keep me from dragging my cursor back and forth across the screen! I've memorized so many keyboard commands at this point..)

Can I confess something: I keep don´t dowloading/deleting paper clips (and some staples too!) because I never thougt they could be used that way, and simply placing them seemed unrealistic. Ill see if I still have some of them to try this tut out smiley

Amazing!! Thanks so much for the tutorial. smiley

I needed that tutorial....
Just ended with me going AHHHHHHHH...
Thanks smiley!

And to think I was making things harder for me by inversing, etc. Thank you. This is going to be a time saver. Now if only I can keep it in my head. I do much better when it's in written form. Maybe one day, I'll have time to write it down but for now I added this resource to my favorites.

I am so glad that you posted this tut Marisa! I have wondered how in the heck to do this! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

thank you so much for this tutorial!!!! smiley

Thank you so much!!!

Much easier way than erasing by hand. Thanks for the shortcuts.

I never really knew what to do with these, so I haven't used any. Thanks for the video!

hi, Marisa, I was wondering if it would be possible to include an image in a tutorial like this so that we could pin it to pinterest if we wanted to make a board for specific tutorials we want to go back to?

@Peggy: I should probably do that. Can you not pin videos anymore?

This is great. So much faster....Thanks!

Thank you for your great tutorials!

cool trick! Thanks!

Thank you for the tutorials. I find them very useful.

Very helpful. A lot easier than masking and way less time consuming. Thanks

Ready to try, thanks! smiley

Thank you

Can't wait to try this! Thank you.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I always wondered that there must be a way to accomplish this and can't believe how easy it is. I look forward to trying this out. Thanks for this amazing tip!

This is incredible. I never knew it was so easy.

Can i suggest a variation on this tutorial? Although mine is for Paintshop Pro, the principle is the same, and instead of DELETING the section, if you promote it to a new layer, linked to the initial paper clip, it will allow you to somewhat move the paperclip, while deleting it makes is very hard to change: http://scrapbookcampus.com/tips-tricks/interlacing-elements-with-paintshop-pro/

If it is not allowed, just delete this post.
