Things I Love Right Now: October 2016
A few things I'm loving right now:
Homemade Applesauce - I've been making a lot of applesauce lately. I like apples a lot, but often they are not as delicious as I want them to be when I bring them home from the store. Applesauce takes something that hasn't quite reached its potential and makes it even better than it could have been.
Doctor Who, I discovered, is streaming on Amazon Prime and it inspired me to start over from the beginning. I've only ever watched the series through once, so it's fun to go back and watch the episodes again now that I know a bit more what's going on.
All the Soup - Soup is the greatest thing ever and I've got two new favorite recipes. This Chicken Tortilla Soup recipe was an instant favorite; I've already made it a second time. Also, I made Italian Wedding Soup, using this recipe as a base. I'm excited to add both these to my soup rotation. Next I'll be looking for a good minestrone recipe (suggestions welcome).
Graphic Novels - Last month I mentioned how I love historical mysteries. Unfortunately, I think I read them all. So I've been looking around for something new, and I realized the library has graphic novels. I'd never read any before, as I didn't have an edevice that could handle it, but with the library I don't need one! I've read several without any real rhyme or reason to my picks, but if you have a favorite please let me know!
Paper Scrapbooking i.e. Messy Table - I am really into my current paper pocket album which covers the years we lived in Korea. I'm loving working with "real" stuff and also that I've discovered an "unused" table that I can just leave it out on. This way I can just do a little here and there without needing to make a big commitment. I'm having great success thanks to this. Also, I spend a lot of time looking at it longingly, so that's motivating as well :)
Cutting My Own Hair? I got the idea to have Jordan cut my hair because I prefer to keep it short, but that takes a lot of maintenance because it grows so fast. I'm not that keen on going to the salon to keep up with a bob. But then I got the idea that Jordan could do it, and then I thought maybe I could do it myself. Turns out you can't really cut your own bob because you can't see the back of your head, but with some help from Jordan I think we had great success. In fact I'm becoming suspicious that it may be the best hair cut I've ever had. Perhaps not the straightest, but definitely the lowest-maintenance. I usually have to blow-dry or straighten parts to keep it from going all directions, but not this time. My hair just sits on my head perfectly well-behaved. I did not expect this outcome when I started in with the scissors. Now my only concern is if I can do it again.
What are you loving this month?

About Me
Hi There! I’m Marisa Lerin and you’ll see me around at DigitalScrapbook.com a lot. I started this site in 2010 soon after I discovered a new love in digital scrapbooking. DigitalScrapbook.com has gone through some significant changes since that time and it’s grown into this lovely community site you are seeing now. I am daily surprised by the turn of life’s events that has led me down this path. If you're new to the site, welcome! Here are a few tidbits about me that I hope will help you get to know me better!
I’m originally from Minnesota, USA, but spent a good chunk of my childhood living abroad (in Bolivia and Hong Kong). I returned to Minnesota to attend university, got married and then moved overseas again (Korea, then Jordan and 1 year of traveling). My designs are heavily influenced by these many nomadic years. I am currently back in the USA, now living in the great state of Oregon!
I have no official training for what I’m doing, since I decided very wisely (haha) to study physics in university. I am always learning new things about digital scrapbooking, and this community has been immensely helpful for that!
If I manage to stop digital scrapbooking you will probably find me watching TV, reading or baking. I also enjoy writing for the blog here at DigitalScrapbook.com where I talk about whatever happens to be catching my fancy at the moment.

I don't know how I missed this post! I am NOT a huge Doctor Who fan BUT I thought the TARDIS coffee mug was adorbs so I got one for my birthday this year! :) (It's in my birthday layout here: https://www.digitalscrapbook.com/tina-shaw/gallery/family-album-2016-tina-s-40th-layout-sept-2016-challenge-flash-birthd... OR a close-up here: https://s6.postimg.org/h7t5f1jdt/20160123_203637_HDR.jpg) That teapot is CUTE! I don't think I'd ever have enough nerve to cut my own hair BUT I do cut the boy's hair in our house!
Hello Mariso,I love autumn and the beautiful colors of nature,I love to walk in the sunshine with my dog,but now, since three weeks we have had sunshine just three days.So I am working on my graphis so I'm happy anyway.Bye and thank you for the good news. :)
I don't always get a chance to read through everything you post, but as I looked at this one I stopped on the photo that was about 'Paper Scrapbooking i.e. Messy Table'. I didn't realize it features pictures from some time ago and I thought how nice your hair looked at the longer length in that particular fall picture. Then, the very next photo was about you getting your hair cut!! Made me laugh. I like your short do. I'm a short do person myself.
I love your new do!
Thanks for all the comments!
@Laura: We have Prime for the shipping, but lately have been using it for the streaming. I think they've been adding to the collection. I guess they got Doctor Who somehow.
@Violet: I'll take a look at your list. I've already read Fun Home, and I've watched Persepolis, so I was curious to read it.
Dr Who....I'm behind on the new seasons, as we have NetFlix who dumped it a few years ago...but I've been trying to work my way through the classics by finding things online. Might have to check into Amazon Prime. Many in our area use it for their free shipping/two day delivery, which they say is a must here in our country, and I'm beginning to think so!
Loving the changing of the leaves here in South Central MO, almost like being back in New England in fall.
Hurray for cutting your own hair! I've been considering it this week, as my last haircut cost $100 or so and I walked out of the salon looking almost exactly the same as I'd walked in. The one time in the past that I cut my own hair it wasn't my best haircut ever but it was decent enough and FREE, which goes a long way, I'd say.
I love Doctor Who though we're about a season behind. Currently we're watching the 11th season of Supernatural on Netflix. I tried several times to get into it before finding a curated episode list online that told us which episodes to watch and which to skip for the first few seasons. That made all the difference and now we've been hooked. Come to think of it, that's how my partner got me hooked on Doctor Who (which I had also tried and failed to get into several times) - I think there are still a few season 1 episodes I've never seen. I do that for people with the first two seasons of Buffy, which is a fantastic show with some very pointless first and second season episodes.
Some of my graphic novel favorites: Ghost World, Fun Home, Blankets, Persepolis, Y: The Last Man, anything by Adrian Tomine (Optic Nerve, Shortcomings, Summer Blonde), Black Hole (which is pretty disturbing so might not be your cup of tea), Palomar by Gilbert Hernandez and Locas by Jaime Hernandez, Watchmen if you have any interest in the superhero genre (which it flips on its head), Diary of a Teenage Girl (a difficult read but moving and important), Stuck Rubber Baby (another difficult and deeply poignant work), Maus (even harder to read and even more important).
I’ve been enjoying more “urban homesteading” this month - growing sprouts, making vegan yogurt in my Instapot, making green smoothies to freeze, and other little kitchen projects.
I need to watch Doctor Who -- it sounds like my kind of show.
I cut my hair all the time using really large barrettes -- first I put all my hair in one barrette in the back to secure it flat and create a guide of sorts, and then I cut. Since it's in the barrette it allows me to hack away at it in multiple attempts. This creates a long bob that is much much longer in the front. Then, I part it down the middle and bring it to the front and make two flat pigtails and even out the barrettes and cut again. I taper the bottom by pulling the barretted pigtails up and away from my ears. (Can you add a 'd' to barrette to make it an adjective? I think so.) Thanks for sharing your haircut, it's cute!
I've never tried cutting my own hair. Well, I was trying to cut my own bangs once - in 1982. My roommate took the scissors away and did it for me. Your hair looks great!
ah, the good life! i also had a phase when auntie cut my hair- experiment went well! :D
