Traveling Around Jordan: Wadi Rum

Last week, or whenever it was that we were gone camping, we also spent the night in Wadi Rum. Wadi Rum is one of the most magical places I've ever visited. Wadi Rum is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a protected nature reserve. Made somewhat famous by Lawrence of Arabia, the 1962 movie was filmed there, as was the more recent film Prometheus. Dramatic rock formations surrounded by desert make for a stunning and alien location. When we go, we stay with a group of Bedouins who have opened up their tents to people wanting to get away from the hustle of daily life.

Entering the park.

From the entrance to the park, you take a 4x4 into the desert. There aren't any roads, just tracks.

A view of the campsite.

When you arrive you are greeted by a traditional pot of tea,
usually very sweet and flavored with sage.

Our Bedouin hosts prepared dinner by burying it in the sand
several hours before dinner.

Enjoying tent life.

While most people who visit sleep in the tents,
we usually sleep outside to better enjoy the very starry night above us.

Touring around you will see lots of dramatic sites.

You can also feel like a real desert explorer by going for a camel ride.

Bedouin Nights

Wadi Rum is what inspired my Bedouin Nights Bundle.

A couple weeks ago I started reading your blog. I read 26 pages that day! I have started again, but this time from the opposite end which I should have done first time around. Your photos are gorgeous!

Despite the fact that I've read and been told that the desert gets cold at night its still hard to fathom. Then again, we still have a ton of snow and I basically start crying just looking outside. I've always wanted to ride a camel though.

So what is the weather & temperature around there in mid-November? I only ask because my husband & I have an opportunity to join a tour of Israel then... Whether or not we go depends upon being able to make arrangements for our kids (they wouldn't be coming - wouldn't want them missing nearly 2 weeks of school) & if the finances line up... Though, I have to admit, I'm also concerned whether or not I will be physically up to the challenge (and can handle all the walking, hiking & what not). Still in aqua p/t working on core strength & all. Hopeful I'll be in better shape by then, but who knows... Do I take that risk? Anyhow, one of the things they mentioned in the tour description was staying overnight in a Bedouin tent for one night, so seeing these pictures is really neat - thanks for sharing! :)

Thank you Marisa and Jordan for giving me the world. Although I would love to see these beautiful places, we will not fly (unless absolutely necessary) and I don't see flying oversees ever. I do love seeing the places you visit is so much more real than seeing it on TV or books.

I too love to take a trip with you and Jordan, via your blog. I get to stamp my passport with places I will never see, and only dream about. Keep them coming! You two are good ambassadors and I can see that you are welcomed where ever you go.

Wow. You makes even me, a very grounded cat lady who misses home even if staying two days in a city nearby, willing to packing a backpack and go away. And, as I think I already told you, Bedouin nights is one of my all-time favorite scrapbooking kits.
