best program for finding duplicate photos

I'm hoping someone can advice me on a good program to locate all of my duplicate images. I have Organizer and Picasa but I was hoping someone could suggest a simple program that will locate all my image files so I can compare them and delete the ones I have in more than one folder. I once had a program which would look in each folder and allow me to divide my photos by good or not good and duplicate. I can no longer find that program on my machine. I can't even remember the name of it now.

I am trying to get rid of photos which I mistakenly downloaded from my camera more than once and also photos I have worked on and then kept in more than one file type. Any offers of advice or what you use would be much appreciated at this time. I am trying to organize my way back to sanity!!! smiley

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Debbie: there are a couple of free software programs that you can download. I haven't tried any, but just a quick review they looked helpful. Here are a few: Dup Detector, DupliFinder and VisiPics. Hope this helps.

Thank you Lynda, I will have a look at them. smiley

Here are a few places you can try.
Some even have a try before you buy option.

Thank you Judy. I have been trying Visipics and it's not bad. There is just the bit of learning curve but it has narrowed my photos down some. I may even venture back to PSE9 organizer and have a go to see if it's quicker. Visipics is not that slow if you don't try to load more folders than necessary. Thank you again for these helpful articles!

I'm moving this thread to the Photography Forum.

Ooh.. ok.. sorry if I stuck it in the wrong topic. I guess since most of my scrapbooking even digital involves organization. I just associated finding duplicates with organization.. thanks for keeping me straight! smiley

I thought the duplicate photo probs only happen to me, thanks for sharing the easier way to organize it smiley

For both PC and Mac: http://www.duplicatephotocleaner.com/
OS:
Windows XP/Vista/7/8
Mac OS X 10.6/Lion 10.7/Mountain Lion 10.8
And, FREE!

Not going to guarantee it, but this used to be free: Easy Duplicate File Finder It's really good at what it does!

IT-me is going to recommend you go with a duplicate file finder program rather than one that just hones in on images. That way, you get an all in one program, useful if you say, keep recipes, etc. on your PC!

Now, you need to be cautious when it comes time to deleting the duplicates! Just make sure you're deleting the right ones first!!!

Debbie, I absolutely swear by Lightroom. It's not free, but you can get a 30-day fully functional free trial. At the very least, that should give you enough time to filter out your duplicate photos. smiley

There's an option in the Import settings that you'd turn on - Don't Import Suspected Duplicates - and just point it at the folders you're storing your photos in. Then you'll have a library with no duplicates; you can move them all to a new folder (in Lightroom) and delete whatever remains in your original photo folders.

Clear as mud? If you want to try Lightroom and if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help. You'd start by going here to download the software: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html

Though I don't use Lightroom, I use Aperture (which is functionally similar to Lightroom). It also has the Import setting option to prevent duplicate photo imports.

for best result you can use "duplicatefilesdeleter"
