@Lorien, it may not sound like it, but I saved your very first response to me in a text file that I open up and keep handy - so I'm listening to you, I promise! I've gotten quite a few kits and have been making digital layouts keeping in mind what I like, don't like, etc. Most are in my gallery, some are still on my computer just because I didn't like them enough to put in my gallery.
I think I may be operating on two different levels. I've got a ton of things I made long before I decided to try my hand at this because I loved the look - ribbons, brads, alphas, tags, etc. So, graphically speaking, I know I can make things to go into a kit. Like Mollie, I need a "recipe" just for a starting point. From the kits I've gotten, I see that they aren't strictly formulated - but I do find myself wondering why this is in one kit, but not in another. Again, I think that comes from my webset making days as sets pretty much had the same thing in each one. But as for digital scrapbooking, yes I'm new. But I am taking your advice about playing with kits and noting this and/or that about them. I'm just anxious to start making them, even if they go nowhere for now but here at PS!
Something I was thinking about when it comes to this thread is that there are multiple sizes in kits.. so think about pricing as well to help you figure out what size of kit to make.
Mini kits: $1.50 to $2.50
Full Kits: $3.99 to $5
Large Full kits: $6.99 to $8.99
Bundles with alphas, templates, wordart, journal cards, extra paper packs and the kits: $9.99 to $12.99
Also, keep in mind.. you don't have to recolor everything. I know one person who has a very large kit that she sells for $6.99 but she also has every element colored to match the palette. In every challenge and QCing that I have been a part of, you don't count those in your element count. You count each element 1x maybe 2x.
This thread has gotten me thinking and I am not creating a new spreadsheet system.. one that will take a look across multiple stores and what is all offered and all the QC items as well as tutorials and any kind of actions.

So, I thought I'd jump into this thread as a "purchaser" and not a designer. As most of you know, I'm here as a part of PS.com because I have a LOVE for all things digital and I love learning to do things for myself; but I have no desire whatsoever to "create" kits to give away or sell.
So, with that said... I will say, there is nothing and I mean nothing that frustrates me more than spending my hard earned dollar(s) on a kit that has only about 5-7 different elements created in every color of the scheme/theme. Especially when someone says: 24 papers and 50 elements and all that really means is I really ONLY got 4 unique papers and 7 unique elements for $7. It really makes me think twice before buying another kit from that person again. Now mind you it's different if I'm buying an element pack because it's specifically say "elements" in every metal finish imaginable. Then I don't mind having 24 brads, skeleton keys, frames, or whatever in all the different styles, textures, etc. Hope that makes sense.
Don't know if any of you lovely designers will find this info helpful, but I thought I would just throw it out there for you to consider in your process.
This is a free-to-copy list of items that can go in a kit that was compiled years ago by some of the first digital designers. I went looking for it on a designer forum this morning as I couldn't find my copy on my PC.
I am so grateful for this thread! I've never really made a kit and wanted to start with a mini but couldn't decide what colours or patterns would go together. So I just hungrily devoured all the info shared here (with all the analogies made to cooking). Thank you all.
I've decided to start with a colour palette I love and do as Marissa said: copy a kit I like and see where that gets me. Great, great thread.
