Sew?

I'm going to go to JoAnne Fabrics to start taking classes

Last September my husband fulfilled a long wish list item by giving a Brother sewing machine for my birthday. I have a long list of items I want to make. Vibrant throw pillows, curtains, gorgeous cute summer dresses form my grandbaby who is now almost 4 months. And much much more. I learned sewing while in school, the basics, it was for that time a forward thing school, not only did you learn the stuff out of books but also everyday life things so you could take care of yourself later is life. Like budgeting, how to open a bank account, cooking, ironing and sewing. Not just the girls but also the boys. smiley
We learned to read a pattern, who to sew in a zipper, how to make a button hole and how to repair things.

Unfortunately the sewing machine is still standing in my craft room, untouched because after my birthday I had a relapse in my illness and have little uptime. It's a neurological illness much like MS. So shaky hands and blurred vision is not going to cut it. smiley I hope one day to be well enough again to create some master pieces!

How about you Beverly, do you sew?

I really want to learn.

I love to sew. Learned as a child and when my four kids were younger, as a stay-at-home Mom, I made all their clothes. I have a couple of little granddaughters that are fun models now.

I hate sewing! If we are talking about making clothes etc! Love embroidery and cross-stitch!

I've always wanted to learn how to sew - save some money & make curtains, window toppers, pillow covers & such. Not sure I'd want to make clothes, though kid's pjs maybe...

I enjoyed sewing years ago. But haven't in a long time. I see a ton of quilt inspiration on pinterest and really would love to make one. Hahn so many projects not enough time.

I love sewing. I learned to sew when I was about 10 years old when my dad brought home my grandmother's old treadle sewing machine. I made everything on that old sewing machine (I still have it 40 years later and its now over 100 years old - its one of my most prized possessions). Then, back in the day, we had "home-ec" classes in junior high. Being the tomboy I was, I took metal shop and sewing. All through university I made extra money by sewing prom dresses, brides' maids dresses, wedding gowns... that sort of thing. Then after I graduated, I sewed all my clothes, because, of course, being poor from being in school for so long, I couldn't afford to buy all those nice clothes, but I could make them for a fraction of the cost. I don't sew that much anymore since my house is so small I don't have room to put out the fabric to cut it out without an animal getting on it (usually the cat). I still have enough fabric in my basement though to open my own fabric shop. smiley

I actually was just given my grandmas pedal sewing machine. It still works like new! So honored to have a family heirloom in my home.

I´d love to learn how to sew, but the most I can do (When I can!) is fixing holes in clothes and do little felt critters...

I am 60 years old and have sewn since I was 10-12 years old. My Mom sewed all of our clothes for us when we were kids. I love sewing. It is a wonderful thing to know when you don't have the perfect figure...adjustments can be made. I have owned a Bernina Sewing machine and serger for over 30 years! I have six boxes of material still waiting to be sewn! I must say that in this day and age I am pretty sure there is not a savings when making kids clothes as fabrics have become pretty expensive.

In this day and age my passion is making Bitty Baby and American Girl doll clothes for my grand nieces! They are great fun and actually are a lot less expensive than buying them from the American Girl store.

I used to sew quite alot, making all my own clothes when I was younger but due to ill health I can no longer manage it smiley I do however manage to do Patchwork a bit at a time with some help from my family smiley

I used to do cross stitching years ago and I always loved knitting, but could never get on with sewing machines or making clothes.

I paid a friend for lessons a couple of months ago, but I haven't sewn anything since then. I'm actually in the process today of rearranging my studio to clear a spot to set up my sewing machine. I'm really nervous to make anything, the idea of making those cuts into the fabric scares the bejeebus out of me, honestly. I bought a couple of packages of men's undershirts to play with. I figure I can practice sewing straight lines and that sort of thing while refashioning them into simple skirts and shirts. The absolute worst that can happen is that I mess it up and eve then there are lots of things you can make from messed up t shirts like yarn, cleaning rags, or ruffles to embellish other shirts.

I've been sewing since I was about four. We had a child's chainstitch Singer sewing machine and we made countless doll clothes, pillowcases and stuffed whatevers with it. I've been sewing ever since. I don't get to do as much as I'd like to, but it's still one of my favorite creative outlets.

I used to make almost all of my own clothes, but just don't have the time to do that right now. And patterns and material costs have skyrocketed! It's sometimes cheaper to buy it than make it. My clothes fit much better when I or my Mom made them.

Does anyone else have an embroidery machine? I digitize my designs or designs I have permission to digitize and put them on totes and other things.

Wren, you can buy old t-shirts to practice on at your local thrift shop more inexpensively than buying new. I grab some when ours has their dollar sale and use them to practice new techniques or make ruffles for embellishments with. Some I've bought have the original stickers still on them.

@Susan, absolutely. I'm a huge fan of the thrift store. I love getting things there for projects that might otherwise end up in a landfill. I thought I was going to get to start my sewing projects Sunday night and by the time I decided to commit to the course of action the thrift store was closed for the evening so I went with the undershirts. Of course, that was before I assessed the damage to my studio... every flat surface is covered with papers and other supplies. It's turned into a 2 day reorganization challenge. So I totally could have waited until after I went to the thrift store after all.

On the plus side I was able to get a 7 pack of XXL white shirts for about $12. I probably wouldn't have been able to score 7 XXL shirts as easily from the thrift store. Not if I were only looking for the marked down tags. Today's project (assuming that I find the surface of my work table) will be figuring out how to sew a yoga style waistband. Whee!

There's always freecycle.org too - someone might have leftover scraps/bolts of fabric or old clothes you could practice on...

I have sewn sinced I was young. My mom showed me how and I took it further than she did. I would make clothes and when my children were growning up I would sew all of their clothes. I would also machine quilt. Hand quilting took too long. I made each child a quilt for their beds and when they were grown I made them new quilts. At the moment I am in the process of making a new quilt for our bed.

I was handsewing tote bags (to decorate them) a couple of months ago but havent felt the urge since.
Otherwise, darning. smiley

I can sew...for the most part. I can use a machine and I can make things. But nothing complicated. Pillows, curtains...yeah. My Mom, she can sew.

I did in high school, but never got around to buying a sewing machine.

Yep smiley. I learned to sew when I was young. My mom taught me the basics, but I didn't do much with it. I picked sewing back up when my daughter was born, and I wanted cute boutique clothing for her... I've branched out since, and I make almost anything in my spare time! smiley

Too bad you ladies with sewing expertise can't host a class for me! A couple years ago, I sewed my husband 2 bowties. He loves them and keeps asking me to make more, but I just haven't been too motivated. I could find the time if I wanted to, but I am just so intimidated.

However, I am finally expecting a little one in October, and I will have approximately 3 months off work before his estimated due date. I am looking for little projects to keep me busy while I wait for him, so I'm finally going to try and tackle those bowties. And maybe a project or two for the new little guy. I'll be sure to pop in here if I have questions along the way!

the only sewing i do these days is to alter clothes to fit me. i made a tutorial in my blog about this if you're interested. i used to do some quilting but it takes so long to finish a project so i haven't done it for a long time.

I never felt comfortable with sewing - the machine scares me I think, I much prefer the old hand opperated or treddle machines LOL Both my parents are excellent tailors and most of my clothes used to be home made as a child. My Dad has made himself 2 shirts and a pair of trousers this spring. I enjoy cross stitch, some embroidery and bead work - things without the sewing machine basically smiley

I do! But I'm a total jimmy-rig sewer!! But I love it!

Janet, like you, I learned to sew at a very young age. I, too, have bins and bins of fabric (like scrapbook paper) that I have intentions of using! I love making things for my nieces, too!

Hmmm, I guess I would say I have a love hate relationship with sewing. I took a sewing class as a freshman in high school but got bored with it. And then I think the following year I made a pocket bag and sewed the piece by hand. So I received a sewing machine for christmas that year but I've only made one or two items since then. I think my biggest obstacle to sewing is the fact that my machine is too heavy to lug in and out and I don't have much table space to keep it out.

I started sewing for real a few years ago when I needed a costume for a show with my performance group.
Boy did that light a fire in me! smiley I never looked back! Nowadays I spend any time I can at the fabric store or the scrapbooking store finding new things for my hundreds of projects I have.
I am a very much trial-and-error, this-should-work type of sewer and usually I get it more or less right.

I love sewing! My grandma taught me to sew when I was about 6, I started making my own barbie clothes! A few years later she passed away from breast cancer (get yourselves checked!). I sewed my own wedding dress to honor her memory and to have her with me on my wedding day. Once I have time agsin I hope to sew for my son but right now I just want to sleep through the night! smiley
