The mind is enriched by what it receives, the heart by what it gives.

I had been collecting quotes for homeschool copywork when we started, since most of the curriculum was, at the time, scripture-based. Here are some we've used:

To prepare for tomorrow, do today's work well.

If you dream of moving mountains tomorrow, start lifting small stones today.

If you cannot be a lighthouse, be a candle.

Never develop an appetite for the fruits of a tree you cannot climb.

The distance from birth to death is experience.

A child who asks questions is not stupid.

Work the clay while it is still wet.

The greatest crime in the desert is to find water and be silent about it.

Dig your well before you are thirsty.

Even though you disagree, do not refuse to listen.

Whoever throws water ahead will step on cool earth.

Only the shoe knows if the sock has a hole.

Not every rainfall must wet you.

A person who has been seen has no further need of hiding.

Perseverance is the mother of good luck.

Beauty does not make the pot boil.

Donโ€™t sell the skin off the bear thatโ€™s still in the forest.

Like soap for the body, so are tears for the mind.

Shrouds are made without pockets.

If you like to sled โ€“ you have to like to drag the sledge.

After the rain, earth hardens.

When you have abundance, build a bigger table, not a higher wall.

Hi Kate
I love that these are scripture based without being scripture quoted. How do you come up with this? Can you give me any hints on your process? I love to put short quips on my photos to make them think a little. I hope this made sense and I hope you can forward some ideas. Thank you so much for your time.๐Ÿ’›
Luanne

Hi Luanne! I compiled these about 4 years ago from around the web, searching for "sayings in (country)" or something along those lines. I know many are from different countries in Africa, some are from Yiddish culture (which could account for being scriptural), some are from Ireland, and the rest I have forgotten. smiley The file got corrupted and I only have these in the recovered document.

Check out Proverbicals! I like how they've organized the quotes. Hope this helps!

Our family is like the branches of a tree; we may grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one :)

The most beautiful way to start and end a day is with a grateful heart.

Love that one Poki! I always appreciate new additions to the list. I do check it out each month when I'm looking for a quote.

"Love yourself for who you are."

Throw out the rule book and enjoy being who you are.

"The real heroes anyway aren't the people doing things; the real heroes are the people noticing things, paying attention" - john green The Fault in the stars.

If you want to understand any woman you must first ask about her mother and then listen carefully...the more a daughter knows the details of her mother's life, the stronger the daughter." -Prologue from The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable?โ€
โ€• John Green, An Abundance of Katherines

Not sure these are my faves, or if I have any at all. Honestly I have a bit of a time with sayings.. Tho some are absolutely true. Anyways, these are the ones that I heard a lot growing up:

An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

God helps those who help themselves.

The proof is in the pudding.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

You canโ€™t have your cake and eat it too.

You can't win'em all.

My shout.

The bigger the hat the smaller the property.

Ten minutes before time make a soldier arrive fine.
