DESIGNER CHALLENGE - August Week 1

Pick a color scheme and I'll give you a daily prompt to create something. By the end of the month you'll have a finished kit! Feel free to do which ever prompts you'd like, completing a mini kit is great too!

In this thread you may post:

  1. Questions and comments on completing each asset.
  2. Finished assets and/or templates. You may of course post small thumbnail images if you are saving the finished product for something.
  3. I'll post a new thread each week so that things don't get too out of hand.
  4. Don't worry if you're behind or starting in the middle, feel free to share whatever you make.

August 2013 Designer Challenge Prompts

I'm thinking these prompts will be for papers, but you are allowed to interpret however you'd like.

Thurs, Aug 1 - floral/damask/ornamental
Fri, Aug 2 - stripes
Sat, Aug 3 - plaid
Sun, Aug 4 - grunge/distressed
Mon, Aug 5 - polka dots
Tues, Aug 6 - geometric
Wed, Aug 7 - fun shape

I got derailed in the June Designer Challenge. I believe I will pick up where I left off that month. Better late, than never. xoxox Beth

I seriously told myself not to attend this time to be able to concentrate on some other stuff....but then again I had this awesome theme in mind for so long now that I just use this possibility to get motivated.

Theme would be: Fligh Away - Dream On (something)

Here is the colour palette:

01-ornamental

02-stripes

I used ressources from KimB Designs, Nothing But Freebies and HG Designs.

I'm new to this idea so of course have a couple of questions.

  • Is this something we are doing for ourselves, or do we post all elements we create here at the end in a kit or just links?
  • Are we allowed to use DigitalScrapbook.com templates or elements to complete our work (I always download for CU) or does everything have to be completely original?
  • Do we post what we come up with daily, weekly, whenever we can or since I'm completely new to this not all in case I'm embarrassed with what I manage to pull off?
  • The prompts you give us, are they for creating something related to the prompt each day, so for example, by Aug 7, there would be 7 papers created?
  • Does it matter if we get behind?

I think I'm ready to do this but I know there will be days where I won't have time to create and then maybe a couple days where I can catch up (hopefully) but I definitely need some parameters for understanding how this all works. Is there a link to some old ones I should check out?

Thanks for all your help Marisa.

@Lisa,
Nice to have you here with us, fresh perspectives are always welcome.
As for your questions, there is a lot of flexibility in what you can and can't do. there are full rules in the forum under "basic challenge rules".
I'm pretty sure you can use templates from digitalscrapbook.com and from other sites as long as you credit the original artist(s).
the idea would be to create a paper per day, or whenever you have spare time. it doesn't matter if you fall behind, creating something is better than nothing, but the competition would close for this on Aug 7th. the following week a new part of this challenge would be running. if you create something but the competition has closed you could turn it into a layout and put it in the gallery (once an application has been approved.)
DigitalScrapbook.com is designed to be a community for scrappers around the world, and aims to inspire scrappers to create, so you would be making the items for yourself, and to inspire others. You could upload them to a blog you may have if you wwish to redistribute the items in a kit yourself, as many scrappers on here do. Some make money from it too.
I hope you enjoy perusing the site and creating with us. Welcome to the community!

Well, I finally picked a color scheme. However, two different graphics programs are giving me two different values for each color. I'm not sure what to do about that...

@Lisa: Jess got it right. This challenge is just to help designers get started and motivated, you can do whatever you'd like, whenever you'd like. Generally I'd suggest trying to "challenge" yourself, so do whatever you need to take something a bit further than you're used to. So if you often rely on templates, try making something yourself, see how it goes!

Susan, I would suggest just picking one value or the other and using it for your creations this month. Consistency within your kit would be what matters and even there some variance, lighter or darker, is visually appealing, not a deal breaker, right?

Just my two cents, m'dear and I hope it helps.

Just wade in, Lisa and prepare to have fun. Everyone here is so supportive and helpful. There is just tons of encouragement and applause to be had to help you keep going and growing.

I look forward to seeing what you might create and share with us. And I am so happy to see new faces joining in on the designer challenges . . . the MORE the MERRIER! w00t!!11!

Isa, I love, love, love your color palette. That is like freshly laundered sheets, sunshine and happiness all rolled into one! Yum!

Beautiful papers and thanks so much for the linkies. I have discovered so many new places to snag goodies and spend MONEY from links like that!

Thank YOU!

I think I went a little overboard. But I really liked the color combinations and had to do each one smiley

Thanks for the welcome and help guys. Not sure if I've caught on to everything yet, but I'm sure someone will let me know if I've gone the wrong direction somewhere. I've created papers and elements before but unless it is something really basic, then I'm not sure I'm ready to do much without templates yet. Still need the training wheels I think. I've certainly never gone so far as to make an actual full 'kit'. So for me to come up with 30 odd elements in a one month period is going to be a serious challenge all in itself. I guess my first step will be to choose a colour palette for the kit and then go from there. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll have a chance to start working.

Thanks again for the feedback!

I am going to play along this month with the above color combo;)

Ornamental

Plaid

Stripe

grunge

Polka Dot

Products used are all from PS

@Lisa: Glad you're jumping in! Just do what you can and be sure to share with us!

The stripes

And the plaid, this one took a LONG time to do!! The preview is full sized. What do you think??

Wow, stunning work ladies. I'm really impressed. Sara I really like your grunge one the most. I keep getting pulled to it and Susan I can't even imagine how long that plaid took you. Amazing. Right now I'm going through a whole bunch of colour palette ideas and hope to settle on one and get at least two papers done later tonight.

Great inspiration ladies. My work will be so much simpler but at least I'm braving the waters. That is a bit step for me.

I finished the first week today. The colors came easy, but the theme was out of reach. Then my son bounced around the house like a pinball, and the theme was born.

Isa Love your color pallet,
Lisa welcome aboard and have fun creating,
Susan very interesting pattern, Great colors for late summer and maybe a boy/man theme?
Sara ...I like your colors and your designs,
Judy Like the color theme and the patterns so far.

I will be working on some things also, but maybe a little slow at first, but promise to have some useful things by the end of the month.

Cynthia, it's definitely a man/boy thing.. I haven't quite figured out a theme yet...
Judy, your papers look great!! I love the name of your kit!
Sara, your grunge IS gorgeous! How did you do it??

Well, I worked on my grunge this evening.. I came up with two different ones. Which one do you ladies like best??

Grunge Paper 1

or

Grunge Paper 2

Judy those papers really do look fun.
Cynthia thanks for the welcome.
Susan I just love the colours you've used but I think that grunge paper 2 was my preferred choice but it was hard because I like them both.

Okay, boy was it hard to choose a colour palette there were so many I wanted to go with but this one kept drawing me back so I'm sticking with it.

This palette is from Design Seeds and is available at: http://design-seeds.com/index.php/home/entry/nature-tones10

Now here is my next question. I went to help and clicked on 'uploading designs' but was told I wasn't authorized and it kicked me to a general yahoo search and maybe it wasn't the right area anyways sooo... I have no idea how to upload any pictures over here. I'm taking the chance that the palette image I chose will upload because it already exists on the web but since we are not given the chance to upload from our computer how are we supposed to upload our designs to show the group? Do I need to be putting them in an online photo album somewhere? Help please and thank you!

Lisa, here is a link to a tutorial on how to share images in the forums. And your palette is very pretty!

Lisa, I love those colors!!

Question.. what exactly is considered geometric??

I am shamelessly copying Beth's most excellent idea and using the same color palette I used for the May element-a-day challenge and WILL finish up an entire actual kit this month. (I will! I will!) I got a little side-tracked last time, but am renewing my commitment to DO IT this time!

Day 1_Floral Border Paper Pair

Day 2_Matchy Striped Paper

Susan, I assume it means a design that is based on regular shapes . . . circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, lines . . . that sort of thing. In other words, all those shapes we learned way too much about in Geometry class! Arrrrggghhhh . . .

I've been working on a kit for September and this would be the perfect opportunity to not only participate in a design challenge/interact with more people, but it'd definitely help me finish my kit on time.

So here's my palette and kit name smiley

Colors are from my niece's wedding.

I absolutely LOVE the top paper. It is just perfect for a grungy man/boy kit. Maybe something to do with sailing or the sea. Just a few ideas. I have no idea what I am doing here but am very willing to learn bit by bit. Hugs xxxMaureen/Mozzie.

Love your palette Lisa. I am a newbie here so I have many questions also. I didn't know I could not upload from my computer for one thing. I have many pages I have made on my personal PC and some on a few sites. HELP please. I will be back sometime tomorrow to find out more . xxx Goodnight from Australia. xxxx

Sharilynn I LOVE the theme/colors!! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Okay, I did two "regular-ish" plaid papers and I chose the bottom grunge for the set. I will make the others available too, just not part of the kit.

Here's my polka dots set.

What do you think? I'm not sure I like the regular plaids, they look too much like fabric vs paper to me...

The geometric is giving me issues. I just can't decide what to do.

@Sharilynn- I LOVE your colors, it makes me super excited about Fall!! I can't wait to see the finished product!!
