DigScrapBook Forum Lingo (Newbies & Intermediate)

Ok... so here's a topic that most of us may not need help with, but I know there are more and more people new here that could definitely use some help on our acronym lingo in the scrapping world and maybe just even the internet in general... So any of you wizards at the acronyms and such... Please share your links and knowledge with us...

For example, A new one I've been seeing a lot especially on FB (FaceBook) and I have no idea what it means, SMH???

SMH = Shaking my head

www.internetslang.com is very helpful when you have teenage boys (and girls too)!! Helps me out a lot and I even checked, there are some that we use in the scrapping world too.

My oldest always sends me those iphone humor screen shots of parents trying to have "text conversations" with their kids...some of them are quite funny. The latest one was a mom asking her son "What does IDK, LY & TTYL mean?" and the son replies " I don't know, love you, talk to you later." ...the mom replies back and says..."Ok, I'll ask your sister." Too funny!

Meh - whatever or I don't care?
Kwim - know what I mean?

@Tina, that story made me laugh! Too funny!!

Here's one I see quite a bit: IMO= In My Opinion

Sometimes they can be confusing. FTW, for example. I always thought it was "For The Win." My brother always thought it was [Dirty Word] The World. LOL Two very different interpretations!

I can't think of any that I use or don't know. I think I had a hard time with FWIW (for what it's worth) and YMMV (your milage may vary) but those are things I don't use in everyday life either. I think that's key for me. Also I google a lot of things and it wil come up with the Urban Dictionary definition. So FWIW YMMV. hehe

I'll better have a quick look at the internetslang webpage before I'm completely lost smiley
It took me several months to find out what LOL means...and when I asked, the looks of my "translator-friend" made me feel like being an alien... lol (Laugh out Loud)

@Tina, my daughter was in the US for 2 months and we would "talk" via Viber. she used TTYL and i had to ask what it meant. she was so amused when i used it in our next "conversation"

Ha. I'm pretty savvy, but then this one popped up on one of my other forums: IANAL.

I scratched my head, wondering if it was a dirty reference. Nope - I Am Not A Lawyer. smiley

@Allie: roflol... I would've never guessed that! smiley
{rolling on floor, laughing out loud} for the newbs

Do you know a simple thing that I took some months to figure out? DH means "Dear Husband". For some time I suposed it was something with downloading or even "designing help" or something like that. Never thought It could be related to husband mainly because in the MMOG (Massive Multiplayer Online Game) I used to play the short form for husband was always hubby.

Lol, DH had me stumped for a while to, although I figured out the husband-part quite soon. My first guess was "Dumb Husband", ROFLMAO (rolling on the floor laughing my ass off)

There are just so many but here is some that i use:
BTW - By the way
GL - Good luck
GLHF - Good luck have fun
BRB - Be right back
IRL - In real life
W8 - Wait
OFC - ofcause
And i almost forgot MMORPG - Massively multiplayer online role-playing game

And ofc alot in my own language smiley

Scrapbooking specific - what on earth is a RAK?

I think RAK is Random Acts of Kindness.

One that I always forget is FTW and it means For The Win.

RAK is Random Acts of Kindness. I use BTW (by the way) and IKR (I know, right?) most often. Other than LOL (laughing out load), which I'm sure I over-use!!!

Just glancing through different posts reminded me that at first glance I often get LO (layout) and LOL mixed up. Always makes for an interesting read to the sentence...

I try not to use "DH" because here in Australia it is the short form of the slang term "Dick Head" which is not a nice thing to say.

@Anne-Marie... I probably shouldn't share this... but, we in the US use the term "Richard Cranium" less crude but gets the point across. smiley
but online I would NEVER assume that's what someone meant using DH. I've always known it to mean Dear/Dearest Hubby... DD (Dear/Dearest Daughter)... DS (Dear/Dearest Son)... DW (Dear/Dearest Wife)

@Shawna: Do we really use that? I certainly hadn't heard it before, but now that I think about it, it makes sense...

@Marisa: I think it's the prim or proper way... if there is one LoL smiley ha ha ha

I saw one a few day ago that I'd never seen before...TBH to be honest, I think. At least that's how I took it.

OOG, IG - Out of Game, In Game
OOP, IP - Out of Play, In Play

smiley

A few yrs it took me awhile to figure out lmao. I thought it meant lameo.
But it really meant laughing my (other word for butt) off.
LOL! I use LOL alot.

When I was gaming, it took me a while to understand AFK (Away From Keyboard).

J., my sister and I had to tell our 78-year-old mother that she is NOT allowed to use LMAO on facebook! We were never sure what she thought that meant. We do know that she thought that LOL meant Lots of Love. She put it in a couple of inappropriate places before we figured out what she thought it meant.

There are actually several acronyms that some of the people here use about digital scrapbooking that I don't understand, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I just usually ignore those posts and move on to read something else. smiley

This is a little detailed and was posted on SB.com Thanks to Tammy Lin but it may help some newcomers I hope. On down the list there's a Scrapbook Related. She really had her work cut out on this list.

@Brenda: NOW... that's a totally awesome list you've collected and shared with us! You may end up being the resident acronym solver here at PS. smiley LoL

Sorry, I cannot take credit. This was posted on SB.com and posted by Tammy Lin. All anyone has to do is print the list and when they don't know what something means look on the list or save it on desktop for easy reference. I don't know if there could be any more complete. I just remembered seeing and went back and found the list to help but thanks for the offer.

well thanks for finding it and sharing it with us! smiley

Wow, I feel like I have to learn a whole new language, or should I say "WIFLIHTLAWNL"! LOL

Lol, I love how there is even an acronym for 'may the force be with you' smiley

wow, I should print this out. I constantly have to ask what someone means.
