Scrap-for-hire - How does it work?

I mentioned my new hobby to a friend of mine, and that I didn't have enough pictures to create layouts with. She said she'd be more than happy to send me hers!

So she got me thinking about scrap-for-hire. I'd only do it casually, for friends, and I don't think I'd charge a lot, just for materials obviously, and maybe a per page fee.

Anyway, my question - Is there anything I need to be aware of before I'd start doing this? I know I've seen "scrap for hire-ok" on some products. Is it only okay to use those? Can I only use commercial items? Is it okay to purchase a kit for a specific project and then not recycle it for anyone else? Do I not have to worry so much on a small scale?

The digi scrap community is just really awesome and I wouldn't want to break any rules, unspoken or otherwise.

Thanks!

Catherine

Anything you buy should say S4H (Scrap for hire) or CU to use for the projects you're thinking of. Also, most TOU's specify that the final product has to be in flattened form (ie jpeg or png files with no layers). I'm not sure what the going rate is for S4H, but I do need to find out as well since I want to add this service to my store. I know when I did it before, I charged $5 a page. I had so many that were S4H friendly that I had downloaded for free that I didn't even factor in that cost. If I were doing something special and needed to buy a specific kit, I would add that cost on top. I'm not sure how easy it would be google something like this, but its worth a try.

Thanks for the advice Cat! (is that your nickname for Catherine?? I ask because it's mine, too! smiley ) I'm new so I don't think of things like TOUs... but duh, haha.

I took a look at a few TOUs of things I've downloaded, and you're right most do say scrap for hire okay, as long as the customer gets a flattened image.

I just emailed my friend to see if we could work something out. I need to feed my new addiction... I mean, develop my new hobby.

I've only done S4H IRL and I made the person reimburse me for the supplies purchased. I gave them the receipts to show that I also was wise with purchases in getting items on sale. smiley and then I also made them pay a per page fee of $10. The ones I did were wedding albums so they were a little fancier albums. I was told by many people I undercharged but at $200 for a 20 page album. I felt it was fair for my time (about 40 hours including my shopping & scrapping time -- plus I was doing something I love to do and getting to stay at home) and I know that maybe here in the south we don't expect to pay an outrageous amount for art like is more readily paid in the north eastern states. smiley Any who... that's my life experience on the S4O industry. Digital would make this much easier, no drive time, less shopping time, quicker time completing pages, duplicate albums for a discount bulk fee could be sold to increase your profits too. Just don't sell your true time and self as an artist short on your pricing. smiley Good Luck!

No, my real name is Cindy. smiley But my on line name is CatWoman (started off as a joke with my husband because I'm the crazy cat lady) and then it just got shortened to Cat. And then I took the name Cat Scrap Fever as a design name, so now most people I know on line know me as Cat.

And I've been "developing my hobby" a little too much lately as well. smiley

Thanks for the explanation. I wondered how S4H worked. I would think it would be something that would be done with physical scrapping pages than with digital scrapping but who knows.

I cannot believe the wealth of information I have found in just the last couple of hours. At this rate I may never get to sleep tonight. LOL

Have I ever told you that my hubby loves your designer name? - it always draws his attention to your posts and kits...

I've only done one S4H project so far, but it was for a high school friend so I know I undercharged. Lol. I've saw sites online that are charging upwards of $400 smiley While you don't want to sell yourself short on your time and creative energy, I'd stay around $200 for a 20 page book, or if you're not doing a book, a per page fee plus for supplies, unless you can find a freebie that fits what she wants. I'm actually trying to do more S4H things to feed my habit of scrapping. Lol. I've been doing lots of freebies for friends and family for a while now! Always used CU or S4H kits even if doing something for free, just to make sure you aren't breaking any TOU! And if in doubt, just email the designer and ask!

I actually came here because I'm interested in having someone create an album or two or three to track the first five years of my sons' lives. Long before I knew about scrapbooking I kept a book with pictures and little journal entries (some long). I also kept hair samples from their first hair-cuts, hospital name bands and other little things. Now that I see the beautiful creations I would love to have it done officially. I live in the Caribbean - Trinidad and craft/ scrapping products are hard to come by. While I can purchase stuff online, shipping is expensive so I don't want to venture into doing it myself.
I'm wondering what the possibilities are. Can I have it done in parts in order to work with a budget? Can I have it done digitally then get it printed myself or just make it into a dvd? Can I have it done manually and shipped?
So, if any one here does S4H can you send me some contact information?
Thank you so much.

Hi Lisa! If you want to have half of the work done by someone else, but still have freedom to add your own journaling and stuff, you can look for stores which sell quick page sets (another way of calling them is "brag books"), but if you really want someone to make them for you, it depends on what will be your deal with that person. This person can deliver it digitally for you, but it will be either a jpg or a flatterned pdf in a way you can print it in your printing service of choice - maybe a local one? - in this case, you can check with the printing service you pick what size of photobooks they do - maybe you´ll want another size that isn´t 12x12in, because these ones, at least here, are the most expensive - and if they have any requirement to the binding be right (some ask for not put information on the borders and will give you a size for these borders that may be cutted off while binding), how many pages will be in each volume, etc.

And yes, depending on the person it will let you do it in parts - even if it is only a tiny portion each month.

I never made a S4H book till now, but I´d love to try - specially from this November on - if you want it delivered only digitally. You can take a look on my gallery clicking on my name to go to my profile, and then clicking on "gallery" and, if you like my style, if you click on the "contact" button the message goes straight to my inbox. But I´m sure you´ll find lots of other talented and experienced digiscappers who also do S4H smiley

Thanks Lorien! I will definitely look at your gallery. I'm a real planner kind of person so I like to check things out in advance and really research so I know exactly what I want. When I'm ready I go full speed ahead. So I'll have to check out printing services locally - you raised some really good points to consider. I didn't know about the quick pages either so I'll check that out too. Thank you so much.

Hi Lisa,

When you are done planning, you can always start a new topic in the forum to ask S4H designer to 'apply' to you. That way, you can take your pick. As Lorien pointed out, there are many scrappers among our members doing S4H!

Thanks Melo. Will do.

Where do y'all advertise doing S4H pages? I would love to do this, but don't have any idea where to look for clients.
