DESIGNER CHALLENGE - August Week 2

Pick a color scheme and I'll give you a daily prompt to create something. By the end of the month you'll have a finished kit! Feel free to do which ever prompts you'd like, completing a mini kit is great too!

In this thread you may post:

  1. Questions and comments on completing each asset.
  2. Finished assets and/or templates. You may of course post small thumbnail images if you are saving the finished product for something.
  3. I'll post a new thread each week so that things don't get too out of hand.
  4. Don't worry if you're behind or starting in the middle, feel free to share whatever you make.

August 2013 Designer Challenge Prompts

I'm thinking these prompts will be for papers, but you are allowed to interpret however you'd like.

Thurs, Aug 8 - words
Fri, Aug 9 - stripes
Sat, Aug 10 - geometric
Sun, Aug 11 - floral/damask/ornamental
Mon, Aug 12 - multiple patterns
Tues, Aug 13 - grunge/distressed
Wed, Aug 14 - floral/damask/ornamental

Okay, I've never done word art of any kind. Any suggestions, tips or tutorial to help please??

Susan, I know I am not officially working on this challenge and just "lurking" but I thought I would offer up a suggestion.
You could start with one of your grunge papers and and play around with adding a layer and typing out words that match whatever theme you have chosen. Say you go with "summer" then you would type out words like -- relax or chill out. You could use a filter like Mura meister copies and make several lines of the words to cover the page in straight lines or even in various patterns.

I am not sure what program you use and if you are familiar with Mura Meister Copies but it is pretty cool.
It is like making rows and rows of the words or words all stamped out in a line or pattern.

You could type out the word or words in different fonts and change the opacity of different parts for different effects.
You could look for "dingbats" which are a type of font that have pictures and use those along with words on your paper.
The words can be straight across or at any angle.
These are just a few ideas.

Oh and here is a tutorial about creating your own word art using PSE
http://digitalscrapbookingtutorials.wordpress.com/2010/05/09/digital-scrapbook-tutorial-word-art/

I hope that something I have mentioned here will be helpful. I have loved lurking and looking at all of the designs while waiting to be accepted.
I plan to be making layouts and being involved very soon.
Happy scrapping.
Hugs,
kay

Word art is all about combining fonts and words and phrases and then just letting your own design ideas direct you. While I've never created a paper with words before I have created a lot of sentiments and quotes. Just find a font or fonts that you really like that you think work well together and play around with different configurations. I'm unfamiliar with the Mura Meister Copies that Kay mentioned so I'll have to check that out sometime soon. Kay has some really great ideas. It is fun when you can find some ding fonts that work with the theme you are using and combine them with the words to create new concepts. Good luck with figuring it out.

Here are my next papers:

08_words...thanks to LennyKravitz for the text smiley and HG Designs again for the overlay

09_stripes...thanks to Sugarbuttdesigns for the stripes and Brooke Gazarek for her texture

Trying to keep up this week.

Wow Kay I love your ideas and hope you don't mind if I use them too.
I also have never done word art. Sounds like fun though

Thank you Kay and Lisa!!

I didn't have a lot of time to work on this, but its kind of cute for a first 'final' try.

My biggest problem is I still don't have a theme for this set/kit/challenge.

OMG Ladies you have done an awesome job as usual. Harriet I simply love that striped paper might have to borrow your idea some day

geometric

Isa, that's fantastic! What song is it? I couldn't read it clearly zoomed in.

Harriet, keep both papers, they're great! Great stripes. Where did you get the stitching brushes? (Are they brushes??)

Andene, That's so pretty!

Thanks for the kind comments, ladies. Susan the stitches are brushes from Boyingopaw and The Scrappin Cop. Sharron please feel free to scraplift. I borrowed the idea from a blanket I saw on the web.

Glad you liked my ideas! smiley
Mura meister is a plugin for PSP -- I am sorry I didn't make that clear in my earlier post.

Love the papers I have seen so far.

10_geometric....thanks to SugarButtDesigns again for the basic squares and Marisa for the lovely texture

11_floral...thanks to Delicious Scraps for the clouds

Harriett, thank you. I'm learning to love brushes smiley

Kay, mura's filters work in ps elements also. I had forgotten I had them!

Isa, I love your papers! How creative!!!

For day 9, I did a striped paper. It's funny, I'm leaning more and more towards the grunge, distressed look in my work. I had to restrain myself from grunging every pixel!!!

Thanks Susan...I am also totally into GRUNGE and have to force myself to stop smiley. BTW, the song is "Fly away" from Lenny Kravitz.

Here's my geometric paper. (grandkids are being really good today and giving me lots of time to play)

Here are my papers of thursday, friday and saturday

words (I made two of them)

stripes

and geometric

Here is my word art;)

Rani, I love these. The color and the passion paper are my faves;)

I am so, so late this month! This is what I have so far!

Here is my WA paper.

What do you think? I have huge difficulty when it comes to creating this type of paper:(
PS distressed template, grunge brush etoile, fonts: chapparal, bowhouse, arielrose, etc all from dafont.com

My geometric for today

Sara, I think you have done excellently with the WA paper. In fact, as always, I am very impressed with everyone's work here. So inspiring to see all these so different pieces of art work. Love it!

Harriett- Love the puzzle
Susan - Love the stripes
Rani - Love the papers
Could go on and on. So far, everyone has some great ideas and colors (and kits)! smiley
Here is my damask

Wow, I don't check in for a couple days and the creativity explodes. Lots of amazing designs here. Wish I could comment on them all. I'm running late and haven't done any of my 2nd week papers yet. I am hoping to get at least one done before bed. Fantastic inspiration from everyone!

I am really having fun (ha!) with this kit.
Here's my stuff for week 2.

Multi pattern. Couldn't decide between the two.

I can't believe how far behind I am. So far I only have completed one. EEK! So instead of waiting and uploading them all in a preview like last time, I'm going to do it one at a time and hope I finish by Wednesday.

Here is my striped one:

I created the stripes; however, I used a template to achieve the texture underneath. The template is one of Brooke Gazarek's and is located HERE

Judy: The set really does look like fun!
Andene: I don't think I have ever seen something so utterly cool. How on earth did you achieve the fabric swirls? Just so neat!!!

I hope to be back later with at least one more.

How on earth are you girls making your striped papers?
I see that some of you used templates for the grunge texture and I know how to achieve that. I know how to use an overlay.
I just don't understand how you are getting multiple colors and stripes.
Can someone explain this to me?

I am brand new to digiscrapping. All of my experience before was using papers made by others. Never made my own!!
Eeek.
