What kind of time frame do you like for online classes?

I'm starting to make plans for starting some classes here at DigitalScrapbook.com, for both layouts and designers. How exactly this will work is yet to be determined, and I'll probably be looking for different input from you as I try to sort through all the options.

First, I'm curious if you'd rather have a:

Self-Paced Class

  • always available
  • no deadlines

Timed Class

  • work through with a group of people
  • deadlines for completing projects

I'm hopeful that both scenarios would include community feedback and interaction.

Although I prefer self-paced classes, sometimes a timed class is just what I need to get motivated. Just a thought...

Boy, that's a hard one. I can see pros and cons for both.

I'd love to be a part of a timed class, but doubt that I'd actually have the time to do it within given parameters.

I also would like a timed class if I can actually find the time when it's offered. Classes with honest critiques would be invaluable.

I wasn't able to choose between the two smiley. Maybe it's possible to do both? To have the self-paced classes and every now and then throw a timed class in there. smiley

I like the idea of deadlines. Like goal setting it ensures an outcome. In sewing, quilt alongs and swaps are great for getting projects finished. Maybe 4 to 6 parts with a week in between to allow for questions and comments. Community interaction would be more meaningful if most of it occurred at a given time. I imagine it would be very difficult for a tutor to stay involved in self paced lessons.

Hard choice. I would probably sign up for a selfpaced class, but than again I think I would slack almost instantly because of it being self paced anyway... So even though I am not sure I would have the time to join, I'd rather go with a timed group class.

It seems to me there is a need for both types of classes. Timed group participation classes are the most motivating and fun, but also the hardest to schedule. That would mean missing out on some just because of the time constraints we all have. Self paced and always available are more convenient but also take self motivation and lack the comaraderie of the group classes. Perhaps the timed group classes could be formatted so that the information would be available later as a self paced class for those who can't schedule the original. Thanks, Marisa, for even considering doing this for the community.

Now that's a great idea Harriet!
