Underexposed and overexposed photos

Ever have a picture a bit too dark or too light. Here is a tip that does work with Photoshop, but may work with PSP and other photo editing programs that work with layers.

If the image is too dark, underexposed:
Duplicate the layer
On the new layer - duplicated layer - use the layer blend mode to change it to Screen to lighten the image.
If the image is still too dark - duplicate the duplicated screened layer.
Screen this layer also - If the layer makes the image too light - work with the opacity of the layer till you are happy with the changes.

If the image is too light, overexposed:
Duplicate the layer
On the new layer - duplicated layer - use the layer blend mode to change it to multiply to darken the image.
If the image is still too light - duplicate the duplicated multiplied layer.
Multiply this layer also - If the layer makes the image too dark - work with the opacity of the layer till you are happy with the changes.

If you try this Please comment and let us know what software it worked for you.

I use this method all the time (in PSP) and it works like a charm. Its the first method I try to fix my pictures.

Yes, this is the first thing I do (using PS Elements 11) for over/under exposed photos. I also sometimes add a masque to the duplicated layer and block out areas that don't need correcting. Or if the area needs just a little correction, use gray instead of black for brushing.

Some good ideas, thanks ladies.

Ooh, thanks for letting me know about that, Cat! And thank you for the tutorial, Judy - I'm bookmarking it! smiley

Man you guys know so much , some of it doesn't even make sense to me but it's in my head so when I need it I'll know it can be done even if I don't know exactly how, I'll know I can find out.
Thanks
