@Sheila and @Cintia - both of your previews look awesome!

I'm working on a couple of things for this blog train - so excited! I love the colors! (I had missed out on the last blog train do to a crazy summer)

smiley

Got my part done already, feeling blah and rather discouraged so sadly nothing too fancy or epic, but pretty nonetheless smiley

6 glitter edged papers and 8 3x4 journal cards

@Sharilynn: So sorry you weren't feeling well, but I gotta say, those papers
are absolutely beautiful!!

Thank you Sheila, Marina, Sharilynn and Brooke!!!
@Sharilynn: Sheila is right, I love them!!!!

LOVE when someone do the basics awesomelly for the blog trains, because sometimes we flourish a lot and end without solids :p Thank you Sharilynn, your part seems great, and, believe, is a very important one smiley

haha thank you ladies, I'll keep that in mind for future blog trains smiley

Very pretty indeed Sharilynn! I agree with Lorien - the basics are very important!

First blog train. I'm sure I'll learn a few things from this....hopefully!
The colors were a big challenge for me.

My kit plus a few add ons that didn't quite go with the main kit. These papers are 8.5 x 11 only.

And the add-on

Like you said, Andene, always a learning experience! I posted some sample layouts in the galleryHere, here, here, and here.

I just finished. I did a lot of experimenting, rather than doing what I normally do. But I've got blended papers, my textured papers, and some chevron, a couple of word arts, and a few elements. A little of everything!

I did a small mini-kit using only three of the colors. Hope that is OK.

Download on my blog.

These are wonderful!!! I can't wait for the next month!

Here is mine, and it will be available on my blog.

I have my kit made. But I need to go over it all again and QC it. Hope it have it up soon.

good morning ladies, i'm excited smiley because i'm done with my kit/portion,
and i can't wait any longer to show it to you, so here is the preview hope you ladies like it :p

Omg...I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!

***CAUTION CAUTION-- NEWBIE ALERT****

Okay I know I shouldn't bombard you girls with a ton of questions but I am so brand spankin' new to digiscrapping and creating anything Full Size at 300 DPI. I used to/still do make tagger items and have even made some kit elements but the papers were 700 by 700 pixels at most.

So here are my questions:

1. Do you use templates and overlays when making papers? Or do you design from scratch?
2. How do you go about making frames and elements to match the kit.

I see flowers and buttons and all kinds of stuff. I have seen templates to make buttons.
And I assume that makes it possible to match the elements with your papers.
3. How are you making the "realistic" elements like the glass of wine or mug of beer?
Are you using images found online or taking a picture and extracting it?
4. Are these elements designed by you OR are you using grey scale templates or PS actions or scripts to make things that
match the rest of the kit.
5. What is the standard size when creating papers? 12 by 12 or something else
6. Do we need to use commercial use items since we are making somthing to give away to others?
Since they will use it for PU only it seems we shouldn't have to design using CU4CU or anything like that.

Okay I think these questions should help me get started.
You girls are so supportive and helpful.
Hugs,

I completed and QCed my part.

it will be on my blog Oct 1

1. Do you use templates and overlays when making papers? Or do you design from scratch?

Depends on the person. I do both. The CU items I use the most are textures, because I don´t want to create with texturizer always, and dont have too many good scanned/photographed textures yet.

2. How do you go about making frames and elements to match the kit.

OMG, I have no clue to give about it to you, as I don´t usually do first the papers and them the ellies.

3. How are you making the "realistic" elements like the glass of wine or mug of beer?
Are you using images found online or taking a picture and extracting it?

I almost never use images found online, because sometimes they´re hard to credit. And most of the stock image sites don´t allow the use as digiscrap ellies. I try to make my stuff looking like realistic elements of paper scrapping. On paper scrapping, I wouldn´t use glue a can of soda on it, but I could draw a can of soda, cut the shape of one on a die-cut machine and mount on the page, have a wood miniature, use a decoupage napking that have a can of soda, a sticker, a felt can of soda miniature, and so on. So, what I scan and extract are things that I´d be able to glue in a phisic scrapbook page, like ribbons, bows, buttons, paper or plastic flowers, etc. But it´s my way of doing this, and I´ve see tons of great kits with realistic ellies like cars, dishes, and other things that I definitely wouldn´t glue on a page... And sometimes I use on my kits CU flowers that wouldn´t look that good gued either...

4. Are these elements designed by you OR are you using grey scale templates or PS actions or scripts to make things that
match the rest of the kit.

Sometimes I design, sometimes I use CU pngs or layered templates.

5. What is the standard size when creating papers? 12 by 12 or something else

12x12 at 300 dpi rgb.

6. Do we need to use commercial use items since we are making somthing to give away to others?
Since they will use it for PU only it seems we shouldn't have to design using CU4CU or anything like that.

They need to be CU and you need to check in each TOU if the designer allows to use this to make freebies.

Welcome to PixelScrapper, Kay!! Don't worry about being new or asking questions. That's what the forum is for! Everyone here is super super friendly and willing to help!

So here are my answers: Keep in mind that I use PhotoShop CS5, so some of these terms may be different depending on the program you use.

1. "Do you use templates and overlays when making papers? Or do you design from scratch?" BOTH! There are some very awesome paper templates and overlays that you can download here on PixelScrapper. Marissa and the other designers have a wide variety of templates, overlays and textures to use when making papers. When I decide to make my own, I will sometimes also use custom shapes, and brushes together on different 'layers' to come up with a unique look.

2. "How do you go about making frames and elements to match the kit." There are templates for frames here on PixelScrapper as well. You can download them, and use a clipping mask to color the frame to match the rest of the kit. Play with the blending mode of the layer until you like it. When making a frame I tend to use either "Multiply" or "Overlay" or a mixture of both to get the color I like, but play around with it and see what you like. This can be used on any element or frame you make. Check in the Tutorials section and there are some tutorials on different elements and how to color them!

3. "How are you making the "realistic" elements like the glass of wine or mug of beer?" Most of the ones I have seen that are very realistic, is because they are -real-. You take a high resolution picture of the object and extract it.

4. "Are these elements designed by you OR are you using grey scale templates or PS actions or scripts to make things that
match the rest of the kit." A little bit of both. If you find a template in grey scale that you like and can get CU, then use it! If not, then you will have to extract one of your own. You could extract from a photo you find online, but make sure to get the photographers permission first so you don't run into legal issues.

5. "What is the standard size when creating papers?" 12in x 12in 300dpi so that people who like to print them out, can do so

6. "Do we need to use commercial use items since we are making something to give away to others" Yes.

"Since they will use it for PU only it seems we shouldn't have to design using CU4CU or anything like that." Correct!

Don't ever hesitate to ask questions. Everyone I have ran into around here has always been helpful!

Thank you Lorien and April for such prompt answers.
Most of the time when I see an answer I like or a comment that seems particularly nice I will click on the person and go see if they have a blog link and/or Pinterest. I find a lot of great sites that way and then I can get lost looking at the links they have as well.

Most of the answers were easy to understand. After a nap I will be looking up:
Clipping masks and how to use them
Extracting a photo

Both are things I have not encountered in the program I use.
I am determined that by the end of the month I will do a layout using Photoshop. (it is good to have goals) smiley

Thanks again.

My part!

Hi Kay, way to go on diving into the world of digiscrap! You are very determined to stretch your abilities, that is really admirable. I'll try to answer your questions, even though Lorien and April already did. Maybe I have new insights, lol.

First of all, this is for when you wake up smiley: using clipping masks tutorial and one on extracting in photoshop (CS5)

1. Do you use templates and overlays when making papers? Or do you design from scratch?
I started out using templates, now I try to make my own patterns and use those. I still use textures though, for the same reason Lorien does; my stash of self-scanned textures is, well... none.

2. How do you go about making frames and elements to match the kit.
Usually I start out with my 'eye-cathing' element, the one (or two) that captures the title of my kit (most of the times). As you can see in my previous post, that is mostly a creature of some kind. After I am satisfied with that element, I think of papers that would go with my creature. The last step is to extract or draw matching elements. I use the papers from the kit to make frames or journalcard in order for them to match.

3. How are you making the "realistic" elements like the glass of wine or mug of beer?
Scan or photograph and extract! Or draw if you feel comfortable with your drawing skills.

Are you using images found online
Never. Things found online are not mine and therefore not usable to me, since I try to keep my kits CU OK. I can't offer them as CU unless I am absolutely sure I have the right to do so.

4. Are these elements designed by you OR are you using grey scale templates or PS actions or scripts to make things that match the rest of the kit.
You can use templates found on Pixelscrapper freely, especially when making PU only kits. I use them lots, but try to make more and more things from scratch.

5. What is the standard size when creating papers? 12 by 12 or something else
12x12, 300 dpi, saved as a high quality JPG (setting to 9 or 10 should do).

6. Do we need to use commercial use items since we are making something to give away to others?
Since they will use it for PU only it seems we shouldn't have to design using CU4CU or anything like that.

Yes, you need to use CU items to create PU freebies. Pixelscrapper encourages you to make freebies. Other designers don't always, so check their TOU. If you want to make CU freebies, you need to use CU4CU.

Hope that helps! Lots of success in your quest to design your first full size kit!

@Melouise: i love your part, very pretty, i love fairies and the tittle "so fairy thankful" very good job smiley

OMDG, I died.

The only thing will ressurect me are those Melo´s faries - so sad that they´ll come only in two weeks.

FANTASTIC job Melo. Someday I´ll draw like you smiley (and I bet this kit will put you in the very narrow list of my hubby´s favorite designers too!)
