Designer Challenge - Journaling Cards Templates

For this challenge I want you to make 10 fun journaling card templates. Make 5 3x4 and 5 6x4 cards. If you feel inspired you can make 5 extra ones in a square version (4x4)

This challenge is an open challenge and has no due date.

Thanks for the challenge! I shall sign up!

templates meaning the gray and black version right? that people can use?

That's right, Annu. But you can also make complete cards, if you prefer. The idea is to challenge yourself in your designing. With templates, you will have a ready made library of designs to reuse when you need them. I look forward to seeing your journal cards! smiley

Annu, Yes templates are usually in the gray scale but you can make them in any color you want. By making templates you will create a good resources you can reuse in the future, which will make your work easier when you are short on time.

I don't worry so much about making them grayscale--as long as I have layers to recolor or clip papers to, it doesn't really matter what color the template is, and multicolor looks so much more attractive when I put bundles in the shop.

I need to get more of the card template kits I have designed bundled up and put into the shop--I've got about a 10-kit backlog!

Your journal cards are too much talented Holly!! Makes me inspired to try making my own!!

Good, Krissy--that's what this challenge is all about!

Here are some Journal Cards I have made. I am sorry I didn't notice the size mentioned above but these are all rectangular shape you can use. I will make some later maintaining the sizes as this is an open challenge.
Thank you so much!! I had fun making them.. smiley

those are very cool Krissy!

Thanks Ania!!

Krissy, these are adorable!

Thank you very much Sharon!!

My journal cards are not templates this time, just ready-made. I have two downloads from dropbox, one for the 3X4 cards, and one for the 4X6 cards.

Very pretty Faith.

Wonderful Faith!! I love those 3×4 cards so much!! Wish I had them in reality!!

Hi Krissy, not sure if I understood your comment, were you able to download Faith's journal cards? If you didn't, the links are there. If you did, please excuse my ineptitude.

I think she was wishing she had them for physical scrapbooking... Krissy, you know you can print them out if you want them for a scrapbook or for notecards? Just don't go publishing them or selling them. Using digital supplies to make hybrid projects isn't against most designers' TOU, you just need a good quality printer and archival paper and inks.

Thanks for clarification, Holly. smiley

Oh, WOW, Sunny! Your cards are beautiful! I really love them! Thank you!

Thank you for all of the kind comments - You guys are so encouraging and thoughtful!

Sunny your cards are so lovely! Thank you!

Sunny, you've got the eye for most of it. Stop thinking you're not good enough, because you're doing really well, making gorgeous things. The biggest thing you need to work on is that your shadows are usually too small and too dark to look realistic. Other than that, you've got this--run with it! smiley

Holly - Wonderful feedback on the shadows - I had no idea. When doing shadows, I usually use black and a 3 - 5 pixel shadow. Do you use a shade of gray and a different size pixel? I imagine it depends upon the item, but I would love to hear what your "typical" shadow is.....Again, thank you for pointing that out! Now I know what I can focus on to improve my game! smiley

Shadows vary depending on what you're shadowing--taller elements like flowers will require a bigger. softer shadow, while a string might well require that 3-5 pixel shadow. My current all-purpose starting point for shadows (for layers of paper) is a dark brown (#281e13) rather than a true black, multiplied at a 35-40% opacity, distance 13, size 35 (these are the Photoshop settings, not sure what software you're using--PSE should be similar). A tall flower like a carnation, mum, or rose might well need a shadow in the distance 40px/size 60px range to look realistic. Strings often need about a 50% multiply/distance 3px/size 5px shadow. Don't feel bad about not knowing--most people start out too small and too dark; mine were awful for a couple of years until I figured out that that was why mine didn't look as "reach out and touch" realistic as other ladies' layouts. (I never had to worry about it in paper scrapping!)

Holly you know so much!

I'm actually studying how to make my shadows better in my colored pencil drawings, which is helping me see them better in my scrapbooking and photography--funny how that all interacts! smiley

Thanks, Holly. Really great information. (I work in PS CS6, by the way.) I shall explore and gain a better understanding of the shadow world. smiley

Faith, for what it is worth, in the Commons section, I added shadow styles. You get I think it was 12 shadow styles if you want to go over there and take a peek and download them. They work with Photoshop.

Elif's got some in the Kits section that are pretty good, too. I still never remember to load up shadow styles when I could use them.

Thanks! I shall definitely use those resources! And please, don't hesitate to make any other suggestions when you see me going off the rails..... smiley That's the best part of being a "Tribe", learning from each other, and/or learning together.
