Designer Challenge - Mini Kit GRADUATION Due 5/25

We didn't work on a mini kit recently so that is what we will do today. There are few patron requests about graduation kits so this is what you are going to work on.

For this challenge, I want you to make

  • 10 pattern papers + optional solids
  • 30 elements (20 universal and 10 themed)
  • 10 word art pieces (5 universal and 5 themed)
  • for this challenge use this color palette

500x
Remember that the number of papers and elements is a guideline and if you can't make as many that is ok.

Oh and if you have ideas for fun designer challenges please leave them in the Designer Challenge Ideas thread so Marisa and I can create those challenges for you.

interesting color palette for a graduation bu am willing to give it a try...

I wanted to get outside of the graduation box. With themes that are quit popural we always have to find something that will help us stand out and colors are the best way to do that.

i got a few papers and elements done last night smiley

i found that by adding a layer to the background of the color i'm trying to match and having it visible while changing the color, it makes it much easier to recolor to an exact palette using colorize. I plan to do more with the frame...however, the makes it more difficult to recolor. i think the original image was pink...i'll have to find it and desaturate to gray

Amy, what program do you use?

Also, it is not necessary to make each element in each color, there is no need to include more that 2 the same elements in a different color. Most designers do not offer more than 1 element, they focus on the variety of elements and balance all the colors among all different elements which makes the kit more appealing.

it's been awhile since i made kits...lol....but i have photoshop cc.....

I'd like to give this one a go! smiley Thanks for the challenge!

Amy, You should be able to get the color right by following these steps:

1. Open up your template. it it is colored desaturate it before you take the next steps
2. create new layer and fill it with your color then move it to the bottom
then create above your template layer a clipping mask and fill it with the same color
3. set the clipping mask layer to overlay (sometimes you may have to play around with the blending modes - lighter colors look better at a different setting)
This way you can see the difference between the main color at the bottom and the color of your template
4. to adjust and make the template color match the main color you will click on your gray template layer and open up Image> adjustmants>Brighthness/contrast and play with the brightness slider. It makes it so easy to match the colors.
5. than merge layers trim the element and done!

I hope this will help and makes your process easier smiley

When I opened this palette in Photoshop, the gamut warning had a conniption fit! The only color that was in gamut was third chip from the top. Are we not worrying about printability with this challenge? I'm fine with making a digital only kit, I was just wondering if that was the intention since it wasn't mentioned in the challenge.

I thought I checked this palette for gamut but I might have forgotten. Thanks for letting me know. I reuploaded the palette and it should be in gamut smiley Sorry about that.

what is a gamut warning? does that mean i may need to redo some of my items? for the most part i saved my items into a psd file in case i changed my mind about something...unfortunately i am unable to view any picture on pixelscrapper for the last hour....will restart my computer and try again in a little while...

ok i can view pictures now must have been on my end

@Ania No problem, some of those original colors looked waaay too bright to be in gamut which is why I even checked the gamut at all.

@Amy Color gamut, at least for our purposes, is the range of colors that can be printed by a color printer. Ever print something and the colors look completely different than they did on screen even though everything seems to be fine with the printer? It's likely that the colors used in the document you printed were not in gamut. When you use out of gamut colors, the printer will approximate the colors that it cannot produce which can make for some unexpected differences between what you see on the screen and what comes out of the printer. Typical at-home printers are only capable of producing about a million different colors which sounds like a lot but typical modern monitors can produce over 16 million different colors.

TL;DR Version: Color gamut only affects printed versions of your kit. It doesn't really matter if you don't intend for it to be printed.

If you want to see how affected your kit will be by out of gamut colors, open the kit items on Photoshop and press shift + control/command + y. Any area that is greyed out will be approximated by the printer if you print it out which means you may get lighter or darker colors than you see on the screen. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about redoing anything, if it is terribly out of gamut, label it as "For digital use only" and keep color gamut in mind for next time. smiley

Amy
if you are using Photoshop you can fix anything that is out of gamut this way: Image > Mode > change it from RGB to CMYK - if the image has layers it will warn you that it's going to flatten them - say OK - then change it back to RGB. Save as a JPG (it's already flattened). You're done.

ah ok thanks. you learn something new every day!! smiley

ok so taking into account something else i know how to do: actions and batch actions...i can essentially do this: create an action that switches the color mode from rgb to cmyk and back to rgb and then run it in a batch and fix all my gamuts...right? well, i'm about to find out if it works...lol

yay...it's working....which is awesome bc i created an alpha complete with punctuation (my first one thanks to marisa's awesome tutorial, that's how i learned about creating alpha's and batch actions...which also came in handy here)....now I can run the gamut fix on the other ones i was making just for fun ...i have freebies on my blog all week from a mother's day kit i created and scheduled posts for last night....but they have not been gamut checked... think with the alpha, the 15 or so papers and 15 or so elements i made, i'm done with this one....I somehow missed the theme for June's Blog Train until yesterday and I gotta get to work on that....I really wanted to do a 2 page set...half a tree on each side and have all the elements to create your own family tree but i couldn't find a tree i really liked that was big enough to do...ok, enough spamming this chat and babbling...lol...gotta go package my kit so i can post it. Btw, I would like to post links to the other kits on my blog if that's ok....unless you have other plans for it...

ok, here are the previews....will post to my blog on the 26-alpha, 27-papers, 28-elements & 29-bonus

Here are the zips:

When I first saw the palette, I wasn't sure how everything would look as it was such a bright palette. However, you all did a great job and everything looks fabulous!

I didn't get it done before the deadline but here's what I came up with

Looks great Jennifer.
