Annoying Scrapbooking Trends

And here is another file I ran across that I obviously just copied and pasted from somewhere, but entertaining nonetheless! smiley

Annoying Scrapbooking Trends

• weird little stick figure kids die cuts
• a LO where the embellishments take up more area than the photos
• a LO published that has spelling errors, or unintentionally crooked lines, or something like that
• staged moments kind of pages
• the 'million fonts/words kind of scattered amongst a page'
• embellishments have nothing to do with the subject in the picture and are just used because they can be
• one tag just floating on a page
• CM layouts
• anything super lumpy that isn't memorabilia relating to the page. Charms, page pebbles, etc. My pages are thick with layers of paper, and I use eyelets and once even used buttons, but overall I just use paper. I find these lumpy items distracting, not to mention the book doesn't close nicely.

Tags for no reason other than just to use a tag. Just use a rectangle or journalling box! The only time I plan (and plans change!) on using a tag is when I make a Mastercard "Priceless" rip-off page. I can understand for gift-giving event pages too.

I hate paperdolls, and always have.

Wire. I don't cringe when I see it, because I like the look, but I wouldn't use it in any of my layouts. I can make the same effect with string.

Anything metal. Metal tags, bookplates, etc. This does not include eyelets, though! My own personal weakness. Oh, and I like the Magenta metal stickers. There are exceptions to every rule.

"Tinted" photos. The ones where just one thing in the photo is left in color. I like it when you have a red rose or something left in color, but I see so many where items that don't really have much effect on the photo are left in color, just because it's a cool technique. With the rose example, the rose symbolizes love, and leaving it in color brings your attention to the love being expressed in the photo. Same with eyes, where you have a person or child's face and the only thing in color is their blue eyes. It makes the viewer focus on the eyes, which are an expression of individuality.

Fake mosaics, with the cut-out overlay.

Laminate chips, slide holders, dominoes...

No offense everyone, I swear!

The Title...FUN IN THE SUN
its overused and is really corny. I would rather see no title on a page!

Photos cut with Deco scissors !! EEEEEK!

Photos cut in funny shapes!!! double EEEEEK!

really busy paper that has nothing to do colorwise or subjectwise with the photos! triple EEEEEK!

black and white pics

LO that just seem to be done for a LO sake

LOs that are so collage-y you have to hunt for the photos...
nor do I like lots of glittery stuff.

really bad pictures

huge titles with those fat, fat letters

So...what annoys you? smiley

LOL, this is funny but I'm guilty of a lot of these!

Wow, nice list. I enjoyed reading it.

what are CM layouts?

Marlyn, I'm not sure but I took it to mean 'Creative Memories' layouts... I'm probably way off though!

thanks, Krissy! smiley

While these might be annoying trends in paper scrapbooking, some of them are common to digiscrap too. That said, I'm of the opinion that it's the person doing the scrapping that has to like it, and if they decide later on that they don't, they can always re-scrap it--especially in digital formats!

If someone copies a layout that was published...well, scraplifting's a time-honored tradition, and the pages will be unique anyway, just because the photos will be. (Elements...that depends on the choice of kit and whether it's an exact scraplift or just lifting the layout.)

Since it was during my paper-scrapping days, I think it was Creative Memories, too. They were pretty "cute-sy" then (didn't they have the Doodlebug line?), but if that's your style, more power to you! smiley

Lol this was a good read. I've probably done some of them especially when paper scrapping!

I have to admit...I've never done paper scrapping...just the digiscrapping. I'm probably guilty of a ton of these! lol

I am so guilty of a lot of those, especially during my paper scrapping days! Ha! it is funny how our tastes change. Looking back at some of my first digi layouts, i just shake my head. Not that I'm some great artist now, but I've come a long way! I bet in 5 years we will all look back at the pocket scrapping crazy (or some other trend) and wonder what were we thinking!

Funny list! I agree with a lot, especially the paperdolls.

dang...you probably hate all of mine! haha

Thank goodness we can all create in whatever way we feel is the best. I also like a ton of these things, and dislike many of the cluttered digipages I see, that you can't even tell what the pictures are. Funny:)

These are funny! I also CRINGE when I see photos cut into odd shapes and/or cut with decorative scissors!! Major NO-NO!

Grammar and spelling mistakes - *cringe* - especially as I am a retired English teacher! smiley I've even come across a few downloadable elements online (not on pixelscrapper I might add) that I might have used, had they not included an unnecessary apostrophe, for example. That said, there is nothing worse than going through one of your own LOs and discovering a typo. It can happen to the best of us - ha ha.

I'm with Susannah...grammar and spelling errors just irk me beyond most people's comprehension!!! My major in college was English with a minor in Creative Writing so words are my thing! LOL That said, I think everyone's individual style is valid and whatever the scrapper decides to do is okay with me!

While I stand by my tendency to shake my head when I see grammar and spelling mistakes in a LO, I wanted to add that sentiment expressed well directly above by Sally; everyone has their own style and that's great. LOs are personal expressions of someone's memories and/or emotions; I may not like elements that are too cutesy, but who am I to say how someone else celebrates everything captured in their photo? I agree with a lot of things on the original list, and it gave me a giggle, but I don't want to give in to feeling too snobby about it.

Interesting reading!

That was definitely an interesting read. Well I think everyone has their own style and loves different things and Being guilty of some of the things mentioned I just say it is such a personal thing. I believe that all scrapbookers think about their pages as an art piece, this is our way to express ourselves creatively and we can use watever we want and don't feel judges.

After reading this list I am left wondering if "her" pages were totally bland and boring. I am guilty of most of these and in the early days of scrapbooking some of it was all we had. I have gone through old albums and cringed at my own pages... I had the decorator scissors that were popular at the time and oh my some of my pages... But I choose not to re-do them as they are a part of my story. My style is still changing and growing due to trends and looking at what others are doing. If I like it I will try the technique, that is how we grow. I personally think if everyone's pages were all the same what would be the point? In that case just use those old fashion stick in photo albums and don't bother. Just my opinion though... Glad we can all have our own style and opinions. Like it or not that is a personal decision.

I definitely do some of these things, and I'm ok with it. I even have a "Fun in the Sun" layout in my son's book:)

I will say I cringe when I see "Live, Laugh, Love" on layouts...

I also am not a fan of flowers on layouts especially when they really don't fit, but I'm a theme scrapper and know others aren't.

I'm a photo-centric scrapper so layouts with lots of stuff and one tiny pic don't do anything for me, but to each their own.

I know many wouldn't like mine, but I do it for my family and myself, so it doesn't bother me.

One man's meat is another's poison! smiley

Good thing then that many of us are digital scrappers...because we then won't have the problem of our 'pages' not closing properly if using lumpy elements!!! smiley

I have too many QPs collected where the whole or most of the page is filled with elements/ embellies and only tiny squares or circles to plop photos...which left me wondering at the purpose of the QP in the first place! smiley smiley

This was a nice post, Tina...though I have never paper scrapped traditionally.

Also, I for one, love flowers,...& bows, & ribbons & lace...but, hey, what can I say?... So I will use them, at least one or two, in all my LOs...but then that's me...heheheh smiley smiley

I think I have done at least 90% of these things both on paper and digitally. Sometimes I go back and think I was nuts! smiley Most times I'm pretty happy with what I create.

Something that's missing from the list is the sticker sneeze technique! It's my sister-in-law's favourite along with the deco scissors! I'm pretty sure that is the reason I can't seem to convince her to try digital. She can't live without the funky edges and hundreds of stickers. LOL

Olesya, it's not difficult to turn any solid element into a sticker--just add a white stroke layer style (try 15px as a start), turn it to a smart object, and add a texture and a bevel.

Funky edges can be created really easily, too: make a filled path stroked with a brush that gives you that edge shape, then use the shape as a clipping mask.

Sounds like your sister-in-law needs to learn Photoshop, lol. And then maybe you can work on her sense of style. smiley

Interesting list!

The list is quite long, and seems to be a rant! smiley It is through the things we have tried that we see some of the wonderful things created! smiley

I think scrapbooking, paper or digital, is a lot like home decorating. Everyone has their own sense of style and their own likes and dislikes. What may be tacky to some, is beautiful to others.

Even trends that seem universally popular, like steampunk/industrial decor, there will always be people who don't like it and can't imagine using things like gears and exposed pipe to decorate. But the great thing is, everyone can decorate according to their own tastes because you are the only one who has to live with it. And your family too I guess but hopefully they either share your tastes or can at least tolerate them lol!

Same thing with scrapbooks. I don't particularly like flowers and tend to use them very very sparingly in my layouts, if I use them at all. Also, everyone was a beginner once, I cringe when I look at my first layouts that I made almost 20 years ago now. They were paper scrapbook pages and I've scanned them into my digital scrapbook collection. I've considered extracting the pictures and re-scrapping them now that I have learned a lot more about scrapbooking and can do things now that I had no idea about when I made those first pages. My husband urged me to just keep them as is because they show a progression of how far my skills have come as a scrapbooker.

I agree to each their own. For me the annoying trend is a single picture with a bunch of paper strips/embellishments but even with all of that it takes up like 25-30% of the page and the rest of the page is blank. What a waste of a page!

I agree everyone is unique and expresses themselves differently.

Unique to me is the annoying trend of stripes, checks, dots and zig zag lines. It makes me dizzy just to see them and I have to quickly click to a different page. Mind you I have suffered with vertigo and inner ear problems off and on for most of my life, so it could be something to do with that.

I am afraid I am one of those flower lovers, and the colour pink to go with it! If I can find a way of adding a flower even if small, I will. My bedroom is pink and flowery too! Very opposite to my son who is into black and blue, and definately nooo flowers!! So when scrapping with my sons photos I have to take into account his tastes too.

Oh goodness, I'm most definitely guilty of several of those (designing as well as scrapping). I figure, to each their own. What I love, there will be others that can't stand it. That's the beauty of artistic jobs/hobbies. What I love about this site in particular is that us designers tend to have different styles...which hopefully helps to draw in a wide variety of people. smiley
