Any ideas for Great American Eclipse layouts?

The Great American Eclipse is just around the corner!! I have ordered my shirt, my glasses and ready to travel to South Carolina (to my home town) to view it with 50,000+ other people. I have my Samsung S8 Plus which I love for pictures but I don't think I'll get good ones with my phone but there will be lots of people and events around to take pics of before and after.

  • Any suggestions on what pics to take?
  • How to take pics with my phone?
  • What kits are good for this kind of event?
  • Suggestions on how to scrap them and layout ideas?
  • Any Great American Eclipse freebies planned? smiley

What a truly fascinating subject! smiley smiley Didn't know it was on. Here is what I found after a google on how to take pics of TGAE. I would probably scrap the pics in a grid, as I mostly do, with extensive journal describing the personal experience of this continental event (if I skim read right) and use some space themed graphics. Enjoy TGAE, I must admit I am a bit envious, love me an eclipse, I cannot wait to see your photos and layouts!

Jordan and I are feeling a little dumb because we just left the town of Corvallis which was right on the path of the eclipse. Now I don't know what we'll get. Although, I'll admit to not being super pumped about it because I remember a partial eclipse from when I was a kid and it was a real let down smiley Maybe full ones are way cooler? Probably. But now I'll never know smiley

Bit of a downer with Corvallis being right on the path, I totally see, yet still the eclipse could be invisible even if you were at a perfect spot at a perfect time... And look at where you are headed smiley smiley Good luck!

We are going to the campus of Clemson University so there are supposed to be speakers letting us know what we are seeing, tour of the planetarium and probably a gazillion people. I'm excited. I got a glow in the dark t-shirt with the eclipse date on it so it will glow during the totality part. Pray for no cloud coverage!!

Anyway, I am thinking the layouts should be black or dark like when you are scrapping night time events or 4th of July. What would be good keywords to find kits that would work with that?

Oh Angie, that sounds so great... with the tour and the t-shirt smiley smiley . I cannot wait to read that all was good and you had perfect visibility. smiley Dark backgrounds sound great. When I linked the search I had been looking for 'space' but '4th of July' sounds like a great option too. I just ran into this bundle again, I had used it before here and found it really great for outdoorsy and desertish photos. You might have to adjust the colors smiley

I'll be on Kentucky Lake (in a boat), which is not only in the path, but it's very close to Hopkinsville, KY. Hopkinsville is known as the 'Point of the greatest eclipse' because it's where the sun, moon and earth line-up most perfectly.

Interestingly, on Aug 21st 1955 there was a supposed 'alien encounter' in Hopkinsville and it was part of the inspiration for the movie 'ET'. It's pretty coincidental that Hopkinsville is the point of the greatest eclipse and it's on that VERY SAME date...Anyway, It's sort of interesting and it's great exposure for this tiny KY town: You can read about it here.

Thanks for the links about photography. I hope it's not cloudy!

We are near Baker Oregon, which is in the direct path. The area is filled with NASA scientists, and the hotels/motels are full. We even have strangers camping out in our fields.....I hope that it is a really fun event for everyone, yet I am concerned about the smoke in the area due to the Canadian wildfires burning. I suppose that might just enhance an eclipse, perhaps. I just returned from a visit with my sisters in Tennessee. One sister is in the direct path in her area, so they are excited too. I told them that I had heard that taking a photo with your phone's camera without a filter could damage your phone, but I don't know the truth of it. They have their special glasses, too.

The glory of the heavens on display

i found this image in a google search and thought it might be neat to incorporate as a border or something smiley and maybe this is just me...but since the pictures are going to be fairly dark it might be neat to use a spectrum of yellow-orange

Angie, thanks for posting this question as I've been thinking about this too.

If you go to NASA's site, you'll find their graphics for download. They're super awesome!

I'm definitely using this one:

Photo planning-wise, I think I'm going to take all the photos I can before and then I'll try to put my camera down and just enjoy the 2 minutes of darkness (haha, this'll never happen, i'll take 100 pics because I won't be able to resist, of course).

I bought a solar filter for my camera; it's just plastic film that I'll to have to either hold or tape on so it's not very deluxe. But I'll play with that during the build up to totality.

In my mind, I'm hoping to scrap it in a summery-feeling way (picnic, camp, and lots of suns), but I'm waiting to look at my pix (if it turns out to be cloudy or smokey then the layouts will have a very different theme!!) I'll definitely use moon elements too, but other than that I have no idea how it'll look. I'm waiting for the true inspiration on August 21!

(Vecteezy has some eclipse illustrations that I'll look at more closely after my trip)

Have fun and good luck to everyone with their eclipse-viewing weather!

That is excellent, maude!! I would have never looked on the NASA website for graphics. I love the one you posted and this one for the colors on navy!! Oooohhh....aaahhh. I was thinking dark colors but you are right - we have to let the pics decide how it will go. smiley I wonder if you can use the glasses to take pics of the eclipse. I heard about burning your camera lens and I am not risking that with my beloved phone. I'll take them off public domain or something if I can't do it through the plastic glasses.
So much to think about....fun!

I never thought about going with an Americana theme but these posters are super cute.
Space Art

So glad you liked the NASA downloads, Angie.

The film on my filter (it's Celestron) looks just like the film in the glasses, but I have no idea for sure.

Have fun & I'll try to remember to check back in here in two weeks, after the Great American Eclipse!

Hey Angie! We had planned on being at Clemson (we live in Columbia) but one of our pups at his annual this past week has a possible cancerous growth in his mouth. So, vet said because everyone will be viewing the Eclipse it was her only opening for surgery until mid Sept otherwise... So, we decided to stay in town (hubby took off work and all for the event). We will now be waiting to hear that our little one is ok and out of surgery. We are bummed and still have our glasses and will just being watching from here because we're almost in dead center totality. And may even go over to USC if traffic doesn't seem horrific (shhhh, don't tell anyone... two Tiger fans will be there) smiley But then we will be right here in town and can get him taken care of which has become more important. Still excited about the event though... and maybe pictures of him to scrap as a special reminder when everything turns out to be OK on such a special day already. smiley

Wishing everyone perfect sunny skies for their viewing pleasure! Also, those NASA graphics are smiley

There's actually been a post scheduled with a minikit challenge for the Designer Challenges forum--I wrote it up almost 3 weeks ago already, and it's just waiting to post! I'll have to edit it to let people know this thread is here so they can use it for inspiration and ideas as well.

@Maude: Thank you so much for linking to all these graphics! smiley
@Maggie: All these coincidences.... smiley being in a boat during the eclipse is an extra treat smiley
@Shawna: All the best for your doggie smiley

@Bina: TYSVM We have calmed down a little since the first blood results while waiting for Monday to arrive for the surgery and are staying hopeful. smiley

found this about photographing the eclips (haven't watched it yet)

Here is a LO on the eclipse by Kathy.

So how has everbody's eclipse been?

I ran into photos of the event close to your place, Sunny smiley Some show!

Mine was awesome, amazing, wonderful! Want to do it again. I uploaded my two page layout here and here.

Eclipse was amazing, here in Oregon! Besides the beauty of the eclipse, it was interesting to see the temperature drop 10 degrees within minutes. The birds got quiet, and all the neighborhood lights that were set to come on at dark all came on! My sister was in the totality zone of Tennessee, and they sent me a few photos of their viewing. Thankful for clear skies, for viewing. Thank goodness I was not in Madras Oregon. That is a small town of 2500 people. They had an influx of 100,000 people for the viewing, all trying to use the same restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. When the eclipse was over, the majority of tourists wanted to leave town at the same time. It took 3 hours to drive just one mile. Despite that, I think that everyone was really thrilled to see the wonders of the sky.

I was in Madras for the whole weekend and it was great. I thought they were well-prepared and we all had a wonderful time. (Although the traffic getting out on Monday was most definitely horrendous.)

in case anyone is looking for a cute kit: http://the-lilypad.com/store/digital-scrapbooking-kit-eclipse.html

Ours ended up being pretty great! Our little guy came out of a 2 hour surgery but they decided to keep him all afternoon for observation so we took our other pup with us and headed to the Line of Totality NW of Lexington, SC. It was amazing!!! There was only about 30 of us there because everyone was scared of the cloud coverage they had went further south (places like Charleston) and unfortunately the clouds made it not so great for them. We saw it the entire 3'ish hours perfectly. Met a lot of nice folk from all around us, way up the east coast like PA & MA and then a few GA and AL folk. We had gorgeous skies and an awe inspiring experience. The weather changed... Cicadas, Crickets, Frogs, 'Skeeters, and came out... temp dropped about 5-8 degrees. We saw the Snake Shadows! Everyone was laughing at me as I was telling them to pay attention right afterwards (said I must've been on the sauce already) smiley But when they showed up everyone was like WOW!!! We saw the crescent shapes through the tree leaves on the ground, our shadows were so CRISP.
We wore special shirts my hubby and I made for the event. And took our little girl pup with us. We stayed in the car AC a lot (off & on between glances) through the first hour. It was 96 here. smiley

smiley Angie, Sunny, Maud, Shawna: smiley Wow, so cool! Reading this makes me feel a bit as if I had been there myself.... Shawna: How is your puppy?

And today I ran into this beauty by Alli smiley

@Bina: Thanks for asking!

Unfortunately, we did not get good news. We have been beyond heart broken this week. We were at the oncologists on Tuesday but even with $10,000-12,000 we would only be able to add a few months to his life. Apparently... out of NO WHERE about 6-8 weeks ago they assume, he has gotten (or his genes activated) a very aggressive malignant Melanomia (inside his mouth). Even after surgery just 16 days ago it is already growing back. smiley smiley smiley This week has been an insane whirlwind of decisions we never thought we'd have to make especially not in a 8-9 year old dog. We are somewhat in between the stages of grief and denial but trying to not have stress or a whole lot of crying and just enjoy every moment with him. There is so much to the story (I'm not ready to share just yet) but he is a very very very special little guy for us. A miracle gift God gave us to heal so much pain and bring happiness into our lives. It's amazing how these little ones can become so much a part of the family (like a human almost).

Sorry, if my post turned into a bummer. I don't mean to make a sad situation for anyone. Hug your little fur-babies extra tight. smiley
