Deleting kits.

It is kinda sad but more so wonderful feeling. Today I deleted over 3,000 files that I had downloaded and never even unzipped - most of these were freebies that I "had to have" because I liked them when I first started. Now I have been digital scrapbooking for a while I know the things that I like and don't like, what I will use and what I won't use and because of this I can truly only download what I like and will use. Which makes me happy. I am glad that I have reached a point where I don't have to have every kit I see. smiley

i love that sort of purging!
did some myself today. still got tons more of the old stock i could easily do without, but just don't have the heart...
i used to be into that "realistic/ highly dimensional" type of scrapping, not "flat/ paper", so those are the kits i'm trying to reduce.
though, i must say all the cool things happening here on PS kept me so occupied i've hardly had time to look for new kits elsewhere. and all that hopping around, keeping track of daily downloads etc is too exhausting and i've really had enough.
feels much better too - actually using the stuff, instead of hoarding - just like you said smiley
if i deleted every item after i've scrapped with it, i think i'd still have more stuff then i could ever use. and that's just stupid.
so yay and hooray for you, kaleena, keep it up! infact, lets make it a weekly thing: "Delete-a-Kit Day" !

I used to keep every kit complete, but now I chop them up, and only keep the stuff I LOVE, and just toss the rest. It's a pain to rename every file, though - I downloaded a bulk renaming program that Marisa recommended, but haven't come to grips with it yet. There are so many little boxes to fill in that it's quite scary-looking!

I did the same thing last year while I was organizing all the files into a format I easily could use to find specific elements and papers. I got rid of around 50G worth of stuff that I knew I'd never use.

I for one am so proud of you Kaleena! This is one of my goals this year to purge purge purge! That includes digital and soooo much more. smiley

Wow! That is great! I too am at a point where I only download what I use, I don't download to download any more and I don't hop every blog train I see. I got kind of sick of getting spam and whatnot. I've also developed a system, whereas if there is a kit that has elements I don't tend to use, I just delete them on sight, and haven't had a problem yet needing something that I have deleted. I still have a lot of kits though...my husband still thinks I have too many smiley

Good for you guys (gals)! I'm no good at purging. Most of my digital clutter is stuff I made, though, and I hate to get rid of it...

That feeling is so liberating smiley
Gratz smiley
I'm getting there slowly smiley

It really is liberating, Soro!

Love this idea, Paddy: lets make it a weekly thing: "Delete-a-Kit Day" ! How about Tuesdays?

I kept hearing this guys voice in my head:

tuesdays work fine for me!
it's a deal! smiley

'Delete-a-kit day' really makes me laugh!
What I do myself is, like somebody else mentioned here, only keep the items of a kit I know I would use and delete the other stuff right away. I force myself to put everything into the right maps, too (maps named 'messy stitches' or 'photo frames') so I can actually find the stuff I saved, too smiley
When I started scrapping I just put everything on my hard drive thinking it would take too much time to organize but now I realize it actually saves time in the end. It is still boring though smiley
Maybe a 'organize-your-scrap stuff' day should do the trick; shared sorrow is half a sorrow smiley

I started doing the same thing you do, Robyn, about a year ago. I haven't gone deeper than that, though, which I need to do. Once I have, scrapping will become a little easier. But I admit I dread all the work I'll have to do - renaming stuff and such - because I found a lot of designers didn't have a specific file naming format, and if I'm to give proper credit I need that info. on each piece (esp. because I don't always keep things together by kit).

here's what i think, lizanne - if they don't even bother to put their name on their designs, they shouldn't expect/ demand credit, either.
i'm sorry, but all that crediting & huge fuss about "this is mine, mine and only mine and you better list me and my blog and my kit and my shoe size" iritates me.
designs in general should be as open as possible, not giving people headaches with all the TOU-this-TOU-that.
especially since this is just a hobby for most of us.
i try to do my best to keep track of everyones names and all, but refuse to let that kill all the fun out of scrapping. might as well give it all up, otherwise.

*and i suggest we also introduce "Scrap-a-Kit Day" - to remind ourselves why exactly we keep those kits on our disks! ...i believe Friday's available... smiley

Oh, I kwym, Paddy... But out of respect for their hard work, I try to do it - esp. if it was a freebie or from a blog train. I've gotten to the point that if I can't figure out whose item it is, I often won't post that particular project online. Though one time I did - I just loved the pattern & wanted to use it - so I just said "artist unknown" in the credits area (their designer name wasn't part of the name of that particular paper, and I wasn't paying attention as I downloaded it or I would've added it to the front, as I now do).

LOL! This is a great idea!!!!

I love the delete-a-kit day idea AND...

the scrap-a-kit day ideas!!! Who's gonna lead them up?

This may get some of us (u'hmmm, I mean ME of course) off our bums! smiley

Why not pick the same day? Start off by browsing through your kits and find one to delete and one you scrap a layout with that same instant! Maybe we can get Marisa to make it a whole new category in the Layout Challenges forum, heeheehee!

@Melo: I like that idea! We could do the same day and then set an amount of kits or a size to shoot for (say 100MBs for those of us that tend to delete items in a kit we don't use) and find one kit to scrap with... Then if people are the types to use a kit only once... They would actually be able to delete an extra kit once their layout was done. smiley

Another idea is we could say for some people that have TONS of kits and want to do mini purges could go through an entire designers folder that week. I guess the third option could be we make up our OWN goal, post it... then come back at the end of the day and say how we did. smiley Giving us accountability... hmmmm so many ideas of how to do this... why can't I just DO IT?!?! LoL

Ooooh, I love your last idea, giving accountability at the end of the day and posting your own what-to-delete-and/or-scrap-with goals. Squee! Let's go ask Marisa smiley

OK Ladies: Sooooo... we're working on trying to make this a permanent challenge...

How many of you would be interested in participating in it? Two parts: Purge Fest and Scrap-a-kit...
I know we already have a couple of us moderators... that have been known to hoard a bit in the past (uh'hmm and present). LoL

How about YOU??? Wanna Play??? smiley

I would like to try to participate in purging and scrap-a-kit with accountability of some sort! I think it would, in the long run, create a healthy habit for me. Hope. smiley I'm not sure I could do it in a single day. I'm willing to try if that's what is decided though.

@Shawna: I think it would depend upon what rules you girls come up with - I don't like to commit to anything unless I know for sure I can do it. smiley But so far it sounds like something that would definitely interest me.

same as Lizanne! smiley

We're thinking a week for the process of the challenge for the two combined... how does that sound?

I'm coming off a long illness, so I don't want to commit myself to anything right now (not sure I'll have the energy). But it's a really great idea & concept. I may do some & post what I accomplished (if I am able to), but right now I don't want to put it in writing.....because if I do I will feel I have to, no matter how awful &/or low on energy I feel, and will bend over backwards to meet that commitment. And right now my primary goal is getting better. smiley

I'm kind of new to digital scrapbooking so I still download almost every free kit I can find. We are saving for a house so I promised my husband I would stop buying crafting supplies, which means I can only get the free kits. I do delete some of the items I know I'll never use, but that is just a very small percentage of the items I download. Being new I still think - one day I might need this , but I hope to one day be in your position, to be confident in my style and be able to pick and choose which kits I download.
