Have you ever used Dingbats to surround shapes?

You can choose a circle or star, oval or square and maybe even others as your shape and then choose a Dingbat and you can have maybe a frame for a photo or to go around other elements. If you would like to know how let me know and I will write a tutorial.

Hey Brenda: Can you show us a sample, please... for those of us more "visual" types? smiley

Sure Shawna, Here are a couple of samples real quick.

Brenda ... are you using the polar co-ordinates filter to do these ... too cute smiley

Susan, Sorry, no not using polar co-ordinates just shapes and text tool with dingbats.
Here's another, some are a little tricky.

That one's adorable ...

Thanks, Here's another and I guess that's all I will do. If anyone wants to know how let me know.

Well........ you have my attention smiley .... I'm letting you know smiley smiley smiley

Using PSE 10 but should be easily adaptable to most software

Tutorial for Surrounding Shapes with Dingbats

1. Set up your page. I use 12x12 with a transparent background.
2. Set your foreground color to whatever you want.
3. If you want to use just basic shapes like ellipse, rectangle, heart just click on type tool and hold down so your drop down list will appear and choose the text on shape tool which should be the sixth one down. Then go to the top for shape options and click on the arrow for drop down list and choose the shape you want and then draw shape on page.
4. Go across to your options and the drop down list for fonts choose a dingbat you like. Just for an example that most of you should have is Wingdings and then I chose the Sun which is the letter r.
4. Go over to your shape and hold the curser over the line of the shape. An I with a swiggly will appear and Then just continue pressing the letter till you get all the way around the shape.
5. When you get to the end you may need to work on the size of your dingbat if you have a gap at the end.
So just highlight all the way around your shape of dingbats and then go up to your options and highlight the size of your dingbats. Lets say you have 77 pixels, Highlight the 77 and type 76.5 and see if that works to close the gap and if not try 76.75 depending on how much gap you have. At first you will just play around with changing. Some dingbats may not work so well and you may have to accept a small gap or choose another dingbat.
6. Now you can click on the move tool and click on the shape and delete. Now select your dingbats and Size your shape with dingbats to whatever size you think would be good and now you just need to get rid of access by cropping or however you would normally trim around an element. Then click on your checkmark to confirm.
7. Save the Dingbat Shape as a PNG so it will stay transparent.

Using Custom Shapes

Everything is the same as above except the following

Choose a Custom Shape before clicking on Type tool. Then follow same steps above. When you are ready to start with your dingbat around the shape click on Undo Then Redo and Your Text tool should still be highlighted. Take curser over to shape on page and it should be showing Text on the outline of the shape then again just start typing your dingbat that you chose by a letter on your keyboard all around the shape. Then just follow same steps above.

NOTE: Some more detailed shapes will not work. In choosing shapes, think about a clip art will need to have room to set on a straight line for it to work.

For More Options of Shapes and Dingbats do a Google Search for FREE Shapes or FREE Dingbats. Some Examples are http://www.1001freefonts.com/dingbats-fonts.php or http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=721 or

If you have any questions please let me know.

This is a cute idea. I have used dingbat text on a path in paintshop pro and have also made brushes from dingbat characters. I'm going to have to give this a try with PSE thanks for sharing.

Yes! Thanks Brenda for the awesome tutorial. I have TONS of dingbat fonts for my wishblade/cricut... So this is a great way to use them digitally on my layouts, too. smiley

that's a cute idea!
