How to Use Text in Photoshop

I want to start a daily journal scrapbook to highlight my "Not a new me but a better me" transformation. But I am having a hard time finding the easiest way to add text to my pages. When I used Publisher, I just had to make a text box, but in Photoshop I just cannot seem to get the hang of it. I have even tried creating the text in Publisher and saving it as a picture but I was unable to delete the background.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you soo much!

Bobbie ... are you looking for something that wraps around or hugs an element or something just layered on top ? ... are you clicking on the type tool icon? what is happening when you try ?

Here is one way I do it if I have a lot of words or a phrase .... I type it into word and copy it ... I then go to PSE 11 and click on the type tool, choose my font and then paste it onto a layer on my page .... it is so much easier to type in word than it is in Photoshop ... once you have pasted onto the layer click on the type tool again if you need to and you will be able to adjust it then if you need to .... if you go to my blog Cotton Arts Boutique you will see the dragon piece I made with his story under it .... the story part of the image I did in word and then pasted into Photoshop and then I played with different fonts etc until I got the one I wanted.

I am looking for some thing that is just layered on top. When I use the type tool you have to manually return and if it doesn't look right you cannot just add new lines you have to retype it.

What I am going for is a fitness scrapbook blog where I include a selfie, picture of something I may have seen on my run/walk and stats for that workout. I figured I would combine the two things that I love doing the most.

I will definitely give typing it out in Word first. Thank you so much for your help!

I love your I am beautiful overlay smiley

You can also click and drag to make a box when you are using the text tool. Then you can adjust the size of the box after.

Oh my gosh!!! Kristi you are AWESOME!!! Thank you!!! That just made my life so much easier!!! Can you tell I am excited?! smiley

No problem! You can also spell check by going into the Edit menu, took me a long time to figure that one out smiley

Sometimes when I want to add journaling to a page, I will type it out in my word processor (I have used Word Perfect for years, before MS Word existed), especially if it is long and I want full justification. I set my margins to the size I want the journaling to be when I import it into PSP (I don't do PS or PSE). This allows me to type in everything I want to write, then adjust font and spacing and justification. I then export it as a PDF. When I open it in PSP I choose these settings on the rendering dialog:

Resolution: 300
Page size: bounding box
check for anti-aliasing
check for transparent background

I then pull the text onto the LO and position it where I want it. I have no idea how this would work in other programs. I assume that Word will export as PDF. PS surely imports PDF files since Adobe makes both programs. You can see an example of such journaling in this blog post. I don't know if this will help Bobbi, but it may help someone.

Linda thanks for the info, I will definitely give that a try. Also that LO was a beautiful example of journaling, I hope you were able to find your friend. smiley

I use a number of different programs depending on what I am doing. Sometimes for journaling, when I know it's my last layer I will use a photo editor called Photoscape. It's freeware and has some good features to it, I use to create all my blog stuff in it, since it's really easy to use. But, you could save your layout as a jpeg without text, pull it into that program as long as you know where you want the text placed, and create your text that way...it also uses whatever system fonts you have, shadowing and other fancy-ish type things as well.

Thank you everyone for all the awesome tips. It has made things so much easier smiley

Here's some more tips:
To get to the type tool in Photoshop, just hit the letter T on your keyboard
To start typing on a different place on your layout, hold down the shift key while starting to type
To commit type, hit command, enter on your keyboard (Mac)
To quickly increase the space between letters and/or words, insert cursor where you want more space, then hold down the alt key while using the arrow keys
Have fun!

Thank you for the quick tips Maria smiley
