Looking for Advice on Scanner Software

smiley The legendary shoeboxes have been bestowed upon me. smiley
I am looking at a mess of prints in shoeboxes filling one sx moving box, I reckon about 2000 prints, a service is not an option. I can scan them at 600 dpi, I want to go full scanner size to minimize scanning time and not scan single pics, I am thinking about 6 individual pics per scan process, I need software that will then cut up the page of 6 pics into the individual pics and save them into single files.
Can you please point me in the right direction? Thank you so much. smiley
So far I ran the free test version of autosplitter and was underwhelmed. Pls let me know what worked for you. I am looking for speed more than for budget.

I knew you could so this in Photoshop, so I googled it and this came up:

In PSCC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t33l_CEatW -tutorial from PTC
In PSE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB_oK0IrEOM -tutorial from Lynda.com

I hope this helps Bina

smiley Thank you for your help, Patricia. I have used that option in PS and am now looking for a speedier process. I'm actually looking for a soft*heart*ware that does all of the girl's work in the video smiley smiley

write an action to do it...

Writing an action would mean all pics had the same size... well they don't have the same size..... they are a mess of more than a century worth of pics....

HP Photosmart ( smiley chucked two b4 the move) had this software, just throw some pics on, the scanner will present you with as many single files as you threw pics on. I ordered a 'reconstructed' one from amazon yesterday.Funny.

My scanner does that too... I have a Canoscan 9000F (a few years old but I use it with PSE11-can't make it work with another programm, so I leave PSE11 just for this on my PC)

Oh really? Seems I put the question all wrong then.. smiley

I use a Canon scanner. But I use the software that came with the scanner and do not scan to any program. This way I can use the histogram to edit and do corrections before scanning by using the advanced features. It offers a better scan and less to clean up.

The scanner software will also scan the bed of pictures as separate files.

If the pictures are in good shape you can also use the VuPoint scanner. You can scan to the device and transfer the files to your computer. It does have a tractor feed and it scans fast at up to 1200 dpi.

You can scan several pictures within a minute while watching TV. The scan can be used as a stand alone scanner or connected to a computer using their software.

There are two different types.

Thank you so much, Judy! I will have to get a new scanner/software package soon.

Another thought. I did end up with a albums and boxes of pictures from both my side and my husbands side. Instead of being in a hurry to scan everything as quickly as possible, I took my time ensuring that each scan was the best as it could be. I went through the boxes and separated them by either date, event or by family. Most of which how it would fit into our family history and how they can be displayed digitally.

For images that were damaged I took a bit more time scanning to get the best scan as possible, so that I would have more to work with when trying to restore the image or restore as much as what was available.

I still have not completed the task. I still have several more albums to go through, but will one day get through them all, unless someone else has some more to add to the task.

i just bought a Canon flatbed scanner, Canon LiDE120 Color Image Scanner (Black), and i scanned 3 pictures at the same time. After scanning, the pictures were already cut up and saved as three jpeg images.

i will try scanning 5 pictures when i get home tonight and see if i will have 5 cut up images

@Marlyn: smiley YAY, Marlyn. Thank you so much! smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley

@Judy: Thank you so much for your advice. I have got everything to learn concerning the art of scanning. So do you follow any steps? Do you recommend any tuts? I gave the scanbed a good old polish til it squeaked and gave it a go at 600 dpi. The results are often shocking, as the pics are pretty poor quality to begin with and partly destroyed..
Do you also scan negatives?

What I am scanning dictates how I scan. Pictures, images I always scan at 1200 dpi or above. By scanning at a higher resolution the scanner reads more of the picture. It tends to read faced pictures and bring back more of the picture. The rest is up to you. After I edit, fix, restore the image It can be saved at 300 to work with layouts. But I always save the original edited file even if it is large. That is where external drives come in handy. The reason why I save the original is that every time you save a jpg or make changes to it, the quality tends to be reduced. So if I want changes to the image I open the original and than save it as a jpg again. I also tend to go back to use in other projects.

If I am scanning clip art, magazines, books, etc. I scan 300 dpi.

I do scan negatives. I used to use an Epson scanner that would also scan negatives. I did a great job. Used the software that came with the scanner. It was a nice package. With doing a lot of traveling it was too large and bulky. Now I use a small portable scanner that does a nice job. The only drawback with it is that it does not offer a lot of editing options before you scan.

As you can see on Amazon there are many different options.

i put 5 pictures in the scanner but only 3 were scanned. smiley

Judy: Thank you! What you say makes a lot of sense and I wil check the 1200 dpi resolution. smiley
Marlyn: Oh no! smiley This sounds much like what I experienced during my scanning adventures.... I had six pics on the bed and it would connect two and combine them into one pic even though there was a gap between the pics. Left me clueless. Then it would extensively preview the combined pics and show red circles to indicate the combinaion. Made me nuts.
