Scrapbooking Trends

I was just curious if there were any resources (besides looking at kits all over the internet LOL) to find out the latest digital scrapbooking trends. For instance, I remember when cluster frames first took off and were soon put in kit add-ons and offered as freebies.

I'm sorry I'm not much help here... I used to watch all the trends in the sb mags but I got to where I absolutely hated the trends. It seemed to me it was just a way to make us buy more stuff. I know digital is a tad different and I guess if your a designer it might matter. But as a scrapper... I think trends are a waste of time and money. I think we should scrap with what makes us feel good and happy. I'm not saying I don't play around with new stuff regularly, but I would definitely consider myself eclectic in my scrapping because it's quite often something different each time I scrap.

That being said... Digital or not you could always look into the newest latest and greatest coming out of CHA. This is the industry standard that seems to guide what becomes trendy in the crafts arena... scrapbooking included. Most all paper SBing transitions or morphs into the digital world quickly. smiley

Here's an article for 2014 trends.
ETA: Here's an article on a website about 2015 CHA that just happened this past weekend. I'm sure there are more around the web.

Good Luck finding more answers! I'm interested to see what they are and if digitally specific. smiley

Thank you for your response, Shawna. It helps a bit. smiley I read the first article myself a few days ago. With the second one, there are some interesting things in it. I bookmarked that site, so I'll continue poking around on it. So thanks!

I noticed the second article talked about fonts. Using a font, in my opinion, is more along the lines of which one fits with the layout, not with trends. For instance, when I was scrapping a bunch of pics from Disney World, a few pictures are of It's Bug's Life at Animal Kingdom. I thought it natural to use the movie font.

I suppose I was curious to find out how digital designers came up with their designs, if they took them from paper scrapping or, as you said, what makes them feel good and happy about their kits and layouts.

Project Life is probably the biggest trend going on right now. Everyone is nuts about it.

Otherwise, I subscribe to some more general design blogs, as those trends trickle into our designs as well. Right now gold, feathers, wood and other natural textures are quite trendy. Actually, you can pick up a lot of these just by browsing on Pinterest to see what's popular.

I think most designers make what makes them feel good, but of course we're often affected by what's happening around us, whether we're aware of it or not.

I've seen a lot of fancy journal cards used in regular layouts (sometimes as the "Title" for their l/o) as well as in project life layouts... I've also seen a lot of metal & wood elements, and things with cut-outs.

I've been wondering what all the talk was about Project Life. I Googled it, then looked through the images. From what I saw, it really doesn't interest me too much, though I think that's because I'm really awful at journaling. LOL It seems better for paper scrapbooking rather than digital.

I'm not on Pinterest, and therefore not a site I often visit.

I do like wood, metals, and parchment textures. Especially the latter; they have a grungy-feel without being overly grungy.

Thank you, gals, for responding. It may not seem like it, but every little bit of information helps. smiley

I just remembered something else that's big right now - art journaling... I have a feeling you might like that, Vidia.

I just Googled art journaling. Wow, just wow! After scrolling through the images, I am mightily impressed. That looks like something my nephew would love to do, too; he loves crafting; it's one of those things that focuses his autism. As my sister is always looking for new things for him to do, thank you for mentioning it ... seriously!

I second looking at Pinterest (I am in love with that place). It can really give you a feel for what is happening in so many fields (crafting, home décor, etc). I love how seeing a photo of something can inspire me in a totally different avenue. Like looking at paint colors for doors inspiring a scrap layout. Arrows and little techie symbols (like the pins on a google map) are really big right now too (to add to the feathers, gold, etc list mentioned earlier).

It sounds as though Pinterest is a great resource for you, Sarah. Perhaps I'll give it a go, snoop around on there, and see what happens. smiley

It gets so addicting once you subscribe to awesome boards. There are so many cool ideas. Have fun!

I agree wholeheartedly!!!! I'm a pin-aholic But... I have NO desire what-so-ever to get "help" smiley LoL

I also look at design trends on Fashion, to see what kind of patterns people are going to use next. Usually, they take some months to start getting trendy on digiscrap too. Amd, for colors, Although I don´t use the Pantone colors, I usually take a look to see what tones are in evidence. BTW, I LOVE this year´s Color of the year. I was thinking it would be a blue though...

I'll poke around on Pinterest this weekend.

Lorien, that's a really neat idea, to look at fashion trend patterns. What is the color of the year?

a brown with a bit of extra red - or a brownish burgundy? http://www.pantone.com/pages/index.aspx?pg=21163

I actually like that color a lot; it's very rich.

Last year, Pantone color was a purple. From Jan to March I saw purple in almost all released kits...

Great points ladies. I didn't come across any place where you can find current trends but I think looking through scrapbooking galleries will give you some idea of what scrapbookers like.

Lorien, purple is nice, as long as it's the right shade.

Ania, galleries would probably be better than kits. I should've thought of that myself. Thanks!

I bet that "Marsala" color would work great for the "Furry Friends" bt palette

You are so right, Lizanne!

Trends are funny things - just because something is "in" doesn't mean it's what people buy. I sell on Etsy and I can tell you right now that despite whatever trend there is, no matter what the colour-of-the-year is, my biggest selling colours are blue, browns/neutrals and greys. Pink, purple and teal are moderate sellers. I get very few sales of anything in yellow.

Oh, I don't sell. I was merely curious about the subject.

I agree with you Sally on the point of "trends aren't always what sell"... I for ONE am no trend follower or setter, for that matter.

I don't try to be unique either, but clothes for example... just because it's IN doesn't mean it's ON me! smiley

And as far as my house. I know GOLD is in but I HATE gold!!! I'm a pewter, silver, platinum kind of girl... so you will never see gold in my house unless it's something my momma or grandma gave me and I can't throw it or give it away. LoL

LOL I dislike gold, too. I've always preferred silver.

Trends are an interesting thing. And I'll confess now that I spend more time designing and looking at stuff, I'm more swayed by them, as they tend to grow on me over time.

Especially for designing in digital, it's not like I'm making a purchase for my home or closet that I'll have to live with for years, so I'm much more likely to go with the trends. It makes things feel fresh and "current" and is also a good excuse to try something new. And I think it may be the same for people looking for digital products. You don't always want to be buying the same thing. I think?

In real life I'm much more loyal to my favorite colors. I would never stray from my favorites (unless it's to neon, I'm worried I did not get enough of the neon and it's going to go out of style and then I'll be sad.)

New, inventive digital designs and scanned real items that are not floating around in abundance ... those are the types of elements that usually catch my eye and make me think, "Okay, she's super creative!"

I'm not inherently creative (unless I'm writing fiction), so I have a tendency to poke around a lot all over the internet searching for inspiration.

I totally get this!!! However you are an 80's child... and I'm a 70's child, so mines more vintage colors and flowers (although the plaids and other dull out-washed type colors and style total suck me in EVERY time!!! smiley
