"In Memory Of" Themed kit

I would like to make a request for an “In Memory” themed kit. My son has passed away and I would like to create pages honoring him but find very few kits or ones that are inappropriate. My son was a special needs adult and I would like something that is more appropriate for the loss of an adult child or specifically for loss of a son.

Thank you to all the talented artist who share their creations on this site and thank you for considering my request.

Hi Wanda, as per the guidelines, please keep each forum topic limited to one request (rather than combining multiple unrelated requests in one forum topic). That helps keep things as organized as possible--thanks!

Please edit this post so that it is limited to one request (you can make another post for an additional request). Let us know if you need help in doing that!

I have lost an adult son as well, so I would be interested in such a kit.

I would love these kits as well. I will throw out a caution since Commercial Licensing is offered at PS, that using the phrase "In Memory Of", is now copyright protected. So, you may wish to consider the many other ways of saying these important words.

I know it's ridiculous, but true none-the-less. I had a bunch of designs at a POD which I created in 2009 and last year had to take them all down, because someone decided to copyright that phrase.

@Doreen: thanks for the heads up.

Just to clarify, a short generic phrase like "in memory of" cannot be copyrighted. A phrase like that can be trademarked, but because of the generic nature of the phrase, the trademark would only cover a specific industry (i.e. Apple's trademark on APPLE only covers computers and electronics) and/or would be tied to a specific stylization or graphic version of the phrase (i.e. a particular graphic using that phrase could be trademarked).

A quick search of US trademarks and patents reveals that the phrase has indeed been registered as a trademark to cover:

  1. Decals and stickers for use as home decor.
  2. Decorative decals for vehicle windows.
  3. Wearable garments and clothing, namely, shirts.

Because this trademark is attempting to apply such a generic term to a very wide industry like clothing, it could be challenged in court, but in any case it does not look like it applies to digital scrapbooking materials.

One thing to be aware of is that, unfortunately, there are a lot of people these days going around claiming copyright on things that cannot be copyrighted, or trademark privileges outside of the realm that is actually protected by their trademark... this kind of bullying is known as "copyfraud."

Do let us know if you have any more information on this particular claim. Thanks!

Thank you for checking and clarifying this one, Jordan smiley The only reason I mentioned it is that many of us use our Commercial Use scrapbook elements to create designs on products of the type listed in the registered trademark. Those designers should simply be aware of the 'presumed limitations' when creating designs using any elements which speak directly to "in memory of".

What about "In Memoriam" - is it a known way of referring to a loved one that passed away? I know it is Latin and there are many countries that use that, it could be an alternative just to make sure there's no trademark/copyright issues.

Wanda, Sharon, and Doreen, I'd be interested in working on some designs for this topic. I feel interested to know what your fantasy version of the kit would be like, particularly in tone, but also if there are any specific things you'd want included - there are so many different directions to go in when creating work that deals with grief and loss.

I'm also considering working on this, but it would be great to get a better idea of what you all have in mind, what would you consider appropriate?

Oh wow! I absolutely LOVE this idea! I lost my mother in August of 2012...she was only 56....she died because of an allergic reaction to an osteoporosis medication....being it is so close to Mother's Day, I miss her dearly....I miss her every day...we would talk on the phone like 6 or more times a day...she was not just my mom (and my dad), but my very best friend too.

I have lost my mother way to early and I have been looking for a way to make an album to honour her memory, so something like this to use to remember our loved ones that have passed I would be very interested in.

I lost my mother when I was 27 (in the 80s) from a sudden massive heart attack & my dad from dementia in 2009 so I, too, would be interested in this - but I agree with Violet that there are so many ways to go with this.

For me, since it's been a while since my parents died, I'd love cards or brushes (or both!) that say things like, my favorite story about..., favorite sayings by..., things I remember best about... aka journalling prompts to get me to tell stories about them, the stories, sayings, wisdom I'd like to write down about them. The wording isn't perfect on these but I hope it gives you an idea - I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd love some wording that will prompt me to remember the stories I was told by them, the stories that we all lived together, the hobbies & likes & dislikes they passed down to me, the things they were good at that I'm not (but wish I were), the things I miss most about them, etc.

Basically, if I put together an album of all the old photos (there are boxes of them, dating back, believe it or not, to the Spanish American War!), it would be nice to be reminded/prompted to tell the stories they told me about that time in their lives (their childhoods, HS, college, etc).

As for people who have lost children, adult or otherwise, I don't have any scrapping suggestions - but I would like to say how very, very sorry I am for your loss. I can't even imagine the pain you feel.

I just lost my son May 15th...it's been a devastating loss...let me think some more but I was thinking to include metallics: Silver, gold, varying kinds of blues...and also I think I can dream up some of the word art...I just have never done a kit before...Let me think some more and i'll pop in later with other ideas...I just kinda thought of "In Memory of Emeri" *Smile* it just seemed like the right kind of Title...but it could be in memory of whomever it is...I'll pop by later, right now my DH needs the computer.

I started playing on this in the Commons (HERE). Not sure if it's what anyone had in mind or not, but it's there for the taking. More coming...

I've had requests from a few of my subscribers for "memorial" kits, but I really have no idea where to start. It seems like such a personal thing...like each scrapper would probably go in a totally different direction with their layotus, based on the life of the person they want to memorialize. Even the color choices would be so different for each loved one, don't you think? For Mom I'd use light blue and carnations (her favorites) but that wouldn't be right for my first baby granddaughter who only lived for 8 hours. For Dad it would be completely different...so I think for a designer to make a "generic" kit it would be difficult and then who knows if it would even appeal to individual scrappers looking for this type of kit.

Maybe people could share specific requests with color ideas and theme ideas?

I've still got to make one so I can do the photobook for mom about Grandma. Still haven't chosen a palette yet, though. It's tricky.

Maybe we need to tackle this as a future blog train. I'll confess to still being stumped on how to proceed. But if we include more people, than we'll have more points of view included.

@Marisa YES! I think that would be a good approach. "Many hands make light work". smiley

It isn't much, but I made a mini-kit with an "in Memory Of" theme for the Treasured Blog Train.

The July 2018 DigitalScrapbook.com Blog Train is called Remembrance and it is coming along nicely, you can see the progress here.
