GIMP: recolouring paper templates

I have not been able to find a simple method (similar to the photoshop videos in this forum) to recolor paper templates in GIMP.
In particular, how to selectively color, say every other polka dot red.

Would love to hear from anyone that might know of a way to do this.

I've been with DigitalScrapbook.com for over a year and would love to be able to get to a level of skill to design my own papers.

The only reason I don't get PS is the cost. Thank you everyone.

Cheryl

Cheryl I do not use Gimp, but there may be someone out there that does and has a response for you.

I haven't used GIMP in a while, but a little googling shows me that the process for this is pretty similar to doing it in Photoshop, Cheryl. Select the layer with the polka dots in the Layers panel, and hit the "Lock alpha channel" button (looks like the checker transparency pattern) to lock the transparency. Then you can set your paintbrush to Color blend mode and paint over the polka dots you want to change with the color you want, and it'll only put paint where the layer isn't totally transparent. You could turn a basic polka dot pattern into all sorts of color combos this way, just from the one template.

This trick works well for recoloring grayscale element templates, too. smiley

Thanks Holly! Didn't realize this was possible.

Note: if you're having a hard time finding this icon, it is NOT on the right mouse pop-up window with the other Alpha items like, Add/Remove Alpha Channel and Alpha to Selection. It sits on the Layers Tab, just below the Mode and Opacity levels, just on top of the box listing all of the layers.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write me back. I managed to use your instructions and get it to work.

Now let the artistic juices flow...

I've always just filled them individually with the paint bucket, but I'll have to try this method out! Thanks!
