How can I create an overlay from a scanned image

How can I turn a scanned page into an overlay? Or, maybe that is not exactly what I want. I am new to this. I want to take a paper that I like but need in a different color, Scan it and make it a template or overlay that I can make what ever color I want. If there is already a tutorial for this please direct me to it. Thanks.

If you are scanning a paper first try scanning it in at a higher resolution .... 350 or higher and then changing it back to 300 in the software you are using .... you haven't said what software you have. In PS and PSE it's simple to change the colour .... keep in mind it will all then be the same colour, just different shades depending on the texture/pattern is in the paper. If you want to make an overlay you can create a black and white copy.

Here we go: Enhance --- Adjust colour --- Adjust hue/saturation .... if you already know what shade you want it then have that already set in your foreground and it will come up with that shade ... use your sliders to adjust.....if you don't know you can pick an approximation using the 'hue' slider .... don't forget to click on the 'colorize' box in the bottom right hand corner ...

Thank you Susan for helping

Thank you. I am using Photoshop CS4 on the desktop and CS 6 on the laptop. Just haven't gotten around to updating the desktop. I will check out the tutorial you mentioned and try your tips. I usually scan at least 600dpi. I was trying to change it to a gray scale so I could use the color overlay and make it what ever color I wanted. I did manage a somewhat decent print for the project I was working on, but who knows if I will be able to repeat my stumbled upon process. Thanks again.

Teresa ... there are so many different ways to create a black and white template in photoshop so if you can't find your way back to the way you did it there will be another .... get to know what you have ... explore and try the help section of Adobe ... it takes you right to their site online and you will find all sorts of answers there too ... we just bought an open box HP laptop and it actually still has elements 9 installed which means I don't have to buy another copy of my elements to put on it ... at least for the moment ... a nice bonus smiley

Great info, thank-you

A quick way to change an image to gray-scale in Photoshop is to desaturate it. The shortcut keys for this are... hold down the Ctrl key then press the letter U.

June 7,2014, Edited to add:Sorry, I gave incorrect directions for desaturating an image with keyboard shortcuts. The actual shortcut is Ctrl+ Shift+ U. without the shift key it just opens the Hue/Saturation tool window for manual adjustments.

I do like Rose, but I didn´t knew the shortcut - thanks Rose!

I go by Image->adjustments->desaturate - It´s the same on CS4 and on CS6.

Elements has a black and white converter under 'enhance' which gives you choices ... newspaper, portrait etc and then you can use the bars on the right to change the intensity of the colours. It's a very useful tool and I use it to take out the grungies, background lines etc from images whether in colour or black and white. With all the choices it allows you to get exactly what you are looking for whether you're looking for a soft fuzzy type or a sharp photo

I accidentally left a keyout of the keyboard shortcut I gave in my earlier post but I've updated my post with the proper shortcut.

Great ideas ladies! Thanks!

Thank you all for your replies. Great input from all. I have been printing out my own papers for my 3D PaperCrafting projects and am having a ball. Not really a scrapbooker, but more of the 3D home dec projects (lighthouses, clocks, houses, writing desks, etc.) Paper Pads can be expensive and if you want to make more than one identical project, you need multiple pads, so I print my own paper and can then print as many pages as I want. Now I need a good source for ink!

Wow, Teresa! I love the sound of your projects! smiley

@Teresa: You should share your blog on your profile page so we can see some of your work. It sounds lovely. I went looking and didn't see your website or blog listed if you have one... or maybe you have an etsy shop or tumbler, picture book page?
