PSP X6 - Any thoughts?

I received an offer from Corel for PSP X6 (about 20% off) and I was wondering if I should buy this or not...
From what I've read, one of the improvements is that you can now use Photoshop brushes - which is awesome.
I'm tempted (and I probably end up buying it, lol) but would love to hear what other users think of it. Pros and cons would be great. Thanks in advance

I never had the older version of PSP other than X5, I love X6. I wish I had a better comparison for your. It does do a great job with photoshop brushes, I have collected many. I also have Photoshop Elements and I use PSP more than PE, but like having the ability to hop back and forth if need be.

I used the trial of X6 here at work since I'm still using PSP8 and wanted to see the difference. Wasn't much, for me, so I didn't get it. I wasn't even aware it used PS brushes till you mentioned it! I've used PSP for so long that I really wish Corel would make a Mac version. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I could put in on my Mac! I'm trying out the PSE 12 at home and I like it, but I can get things done much quicker in PSP because I'm so used to it.

The other thing I missed was the tons of plugins that I can still use with PSP8. Most all of them were never updated from the developers as PSP progressed through the years, and I could only get one or two that could be used in X6.

Overall for me, there wasn't much to make me upgrade from the 10 y.o. version of PSP I'm using. If they'd have added a couple more things that PSE has (clipping mask and the clouds filter being the main ones) I'd have gotten it though, I think. That clipping mask is pretty awesome and takes a lot more work to do in PSP.

But heck, it's a budget-friendly program and with a coupon, I'd probably go ahead and get it anyway!

I use X6 and I like it. It is nice being able to use PS brushes. The limitation though is that it will only go up to a 999 pixel size which may not be large enough for some uses. It worked great for me for my 2013 book though - I was able to use a brush set to date my pages.

PSP X6 32 bit does most of the old pluggins, 64 bit will not. The nice thing is, when you buy 64 bit version, they give you a copy of 32 bit too. So I have them both installed and can go back and forth.

Ah, yes, Kat, that was suggested when I was using the trial. A couple of the old plugins did work with the 32-bit version, but not the 64-bit. A few years ago I got a free version of Eye Candy with that lovely glass effect. If I knew that would work with the 32-bit PSP X6, I might would upgrade. But, naturally, I didn't think to try it before the trial ended!

@Lisa

I am on a forum with PSP users, I found a post where someone said they can use eye candy 7 with PSP X6 both 32 and 64 bit. I am not trying to help you spend money though, just thought I would pass that along. smiley

Lol, Kat. I just checked to see which version of EC I have. It's EC 5 Impact, but should still work. If I decide to spend the money! smiley

What forum is it you're on?

-Lisa

It is a forum of users for PSP and an older software called PhotoImpact, the forum it's call PIRC. If you are interested I can send you a link.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I have the same Lisa Marie, I'm so familiar with PSP and although PS/PSE has some awesome features (which I found out by watching youtube tutorials) I don't want to start from scratch learning a new program.
I've downloaded the PSP X6 trial version to see if I like it enough to buy it smiley

No help here, so sorry, I am a PSP9 user.

Antoinette smart idea to try before you buy. One point the tools are all the same in each program. It is the features that the different programs offer and the different tools. Not all programs offer the same. PSP used to be the choice of use for digital art. Not so anymore. There are so many different programs out there. It is a matter of cost, comfort and what you want the program to do.

I have only recently discovered scripts but am finding that so many scripts are for PSP. I use a Mac and PSE, will the PSP scripts work in PSE or am I out of luck with PSP scripts?

Hello Dawn smiley

PSP scripts have the file extension .pspscript. They can only be used in Paint Shop Pro. PSP scripts are to PSP users what Actions are to PS and PSE users.

I was afraid of that...dang it smiley Thanks for your reply, Emerald

Photoshop and Photoshop Element CAN run scripts but not the same ones made for PSP. In fact, the word "script" refers to any code to execute a series of commands, so Photoshop can have scripts (i have one in my store here for example) but it is using a different language than PSP. Also, scripts in Photoshop are different than actions since they have to be CODED, and not RECORDED, which means you basically have to have programming skills to create them.

I have a programmer "on call" so if you find any script in my store that you would like for Photoshop or PSE, let me know. I might be able to get it "converted" to script/action for you (no promise, but i can try).

That's all I use and I love it. I have elements also, and hardly ever open it. PSP seems so much more user friendly...
