Silhouette Designer Edition

I found a picture that I really like on the internet, not this site. It is a picture for a First Communion and it has a cross with grapes in front and a chalice and host. I opened it in Designer Edition and tried to ungroup it. That option is grayed out so unavailable. Then I tried tracing it and then separating it. That also doesn't work. I tried releasing the compound path, but that doesn't work either. Does anyone have a clue as to how I can separate this pic?

Thanks for your help. I didn't know where else to turn.

Are you talking about the Silhouette craft machine with software?

Yes, Judy. I am.

I would love to help but I just got my silhouette and am still learning everything- sorry!

Theresa, is it an .svg file? I'm not sure you can if it's a .jpg or .png. This site Silhouette School helped me so much when I first got my Silhouette. I know she does a ton of tutorials. Also, did you check the Silhouette Store for something similar? It's always easier to work with those files.

Thanks, Melanie. I only found two things to try: 1. ungroup, which didn't work and 2. releasing compound path, which also didn't work. Finally, I went to Inkscape and even though I don't know how to use it, I played with trying all the buttons until I finally got it apart and saved as svg. Then I went back to the original program and fixed a few things and got it to work.

Thanks for your suggestions.

No problem. I have spent way too many hours on that software trying to get things apart, so I know how it feels. Sometimes, I can do something so easily and other times I want to throw my computer out the window.

So glad you got it to work the way you want.
Inkscape and Illustrator both work with SVG files. They will also allow you to seperate layers and ave each layer separately. Inkscape is free and Illustrator is from Adobe.

Judy, you really just saved me a TON of money!! My Illustrator trial just ran out and I was going to pay the monthly fee, on top of the Photoshop CC fee (which I couldn't live without, Gimp is just not the same). Then, like an angel you mentioned Inkscape was free!!! THANKS smiley smiley

So, glad we could help. There are tutorial out there inkscape to help you learn how to use the program.

Hello Theresa
Can you show us the picture, so we can try too?

Sure, Liza. The picture is from ClipArtBest.com. http://www.clipartbest.com/clipart-dcrG7azc9
I can't really explain what I did, but I went back and forth between Gimp, Inkscape and Silhouette Studio DE and finally got what I was trying to do. I'm sure there is an easier way to do it, but I don't know how. I'm not good at any of the above programs but just play around with them to see what I can do. Usually, I check for tutorials online, but sometimes I just can't get them to work.
Good luck!
