When I save a transparent image in photoshop.....

I'm extremely frustrated, and need all the help I can get. I have Photoshop Elements 10. I went through the steps to make my personal business logo transparent (the background is white, I want it transparent so I can add it to my labels without the white background) and while in photoshop, the background is successfully transparent. As soon as I "Save As" and open it to view it, the background is back to white! I've saved it in every format possible so far.... png, gif, PDF, jpeg (I know jpeg doesn't work but I was desperate), and all of the photoshop formats. Any help would be great... Or ANY other *free* programs I could use to make a photo transparent (not the ones you have to color around the area yourself, my image contains lettering and it's impossible) Or if someone is willing to do it for me via my email, I would be so grateful. I've been working at this for hours now and I'm just so frustrated. I've gone through every tutorial on youtube I can find and none of it is helping.

- The problem ISN'T making it transparent, I'm able to do that successfully... the problem is that when I save the image, it's no longer transparent. It is ONLY transparent while open in the Photoshop Elements program.

Jenn ... make sure your background is clear before saving to begin with ... if you have a white layer for instance under all the rest it will save along with everything else and won't matter whether it's a png or a jpeg. To get the transparency you need to save it as a png the others won't work which I'm sure you did. If you want to send me the psd I'll take a look at it for you smiley ... it's probably something simple that you can't see because you are too close to it at this point. That happens to me all the time.

Susan, It's my business logo and has a white background to begin with. It was saved as a png file to begin with because I was told that jpeg's couldn't be opened in Photoshop. I would love it if you would take a look at it and see if you can figure this out for me? It's just a simple logo with text and a small image. I'd love to email it to you if you don't mind. Thank you so much for your help too! I'm sure it's something simple that I'm just missing, I'm just too frustrated with it to keep researching it.

Hello Jenn,

Jpg can be opened in Photoshop. Photoshop can also save as jpg. However jpg cannot save transparents. Photoshop cannot save as png.

You can save as Tiff or PSD to maintain the transparent backgrount. If you intend to do so, hide the white layer. Unhide when you want to see the background. If you print directly from Photoshop it will print the transparent image.

You can also make the background the color of whatever color background you want than the image will blend.

I can do both jpg & png in PS CS3.

If you'd like, I can convert it for you.

Judy, Photoshop can indeed save as transparent PNG, and has been able to do so for a long time. You're correct that TIFF can also handle transparency.

Rachel, I usually turn off the visibility on the background layer, merge visible layers, and save as PNG. You should be aware that it might look like it has a white background in Windows Explorer if it's transparent...my shortcut to verify that it's saved with a transparent background is to set the folder view preferences to large icon, then click once to select the image. If the background goes to my selection highlight color, I know it's okay without having to open it back up in Photoshop.

After you save it, are you simply viewing, as in clicking on the saved PNG file? If so, then most photo viewing software on PCs/Laptops show pictures with/on a white background. Hence, when you view a transparent background image on your computer, it places it on top of a white background. This will make a transparent PNG file "appear" as if it still has a white background when it actuality it doesn't.

If you want to really check and make sure your logo has a transparent background, go into photoshop and open up another picture (of anything, flowers, pets, food, doesn't matter what), then go to "File - Place" and a window should pop up for you to choice a file to open, choose your transparent PNG logo, select your logo and double click or hit the "place" button. This will put your transparent PNG logo on top of the other picture. If your logo has truly saved with transparent background, then the other image will show through the transparency.

Hope this helps. smiley
