converting photoshop file formats without photoshop

I hope this is the correct place to post this. Can anyone tell me if I don't have photoshop is there a way to convert a psd file to a png file? Thanks!

The only way to do it is to open the PSD file first, then copy and paste each layer of the PSD separately, and finally save each pasted layer as a png. There are other programs, such as what I use (Paintshop Pro), that can open PSD files and use them accordingly. Which program do you use? Also, what exactly are you wanting to convert ... a layout template?

I am trying to learn a program but right now I am just playing around with several. The main one so far has been Gimp, which I don't think even opens them, and I just downloaded paint.net because several people here said that it is more intuitive. So far, I don't think so, but I just started playing with it. Yes, I downloaded a layout template and didn't notice that it was psd and saw another one that I really liked and wanted to download, but didn't because I didn't think it would work.
Thanks for answering my question.

Hi Theresa... There are all kinds of free file converters online if you don't have PS/PSE. Here's one: http://www.convertfiles.com/convert/document/PSD-to-PNG.html

You can also google to find others. (Just note that these will convert to a single .png, so you will lose any individual layers.) When I was out of town I had to convert a RAW to JPG but didn't have adobe raw on my laptop and had to find one online. I was actually surprised at all the free resources. I would just be wary of any that ask for your e-mail address because they may sell it to be spammed.

Hope that helps. smiley

Thanks, Amanda. I may try that.

Thank you! for this post and the information! I didn't know you could do that and I needed to!

Theresa, Gimp does let you open up PSD files. You should be okay opening a layout template. smiley

If you are on a Mac, you can open the psd files with Aperçu, then save it as a png or other format file.

Vidia,

I will have to try again. I must have messed something up. I'm not very good at Gimp, but I am trying.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Did you manage to open the file?

Vidia,

Things got a little busy and we are having company today so I won't even try until tomorrow or the next day. I will let you know. Thanks for being so supportive!

Vidia,

OK, I kept thinking about it and finally decided I better try it so I could just visit with my company when they get here. Yes, it worked very easily. I guess I was trying to open it under templates that I found one time, instead of just opening the file as layers. Thank you so much!

Excellent! I'm glad you figured it out. smiley You're welcome!

Hello Teresa and other ladies! I love the info on this topic. I changed the title and moved it to software specific questions so it didn´t get lost on Chit Chat. It will for sure be helpful to others in the future.

Lorien,

Thank you. I'm sorry for putting it in the wrong place and causing you so much trouble.

Theresa welcome to software specific. It was no trouble. We enjoy helping.
