Emma & Mr Knightley

We just finished watching the 2009 BBC production of Emma, which is a pretty good time, if you're a fan of Jane Austen.

Emma may be my favorite Jane Austen, in part because it was the first story I experienced, and it has stuck with me (thanks also to Clueless, another favorite).

Discussions after this most recent viewing of Emma may have outed my preference of Mr Knightley as my preferred Jane Austen hero. Can I get any sympathy for this opinion? Who's your favorite hero?

I would have to say that I love her villains the most...she has a way of writing that just invites you to want to smack the smirks right off their faces!! smiley I think Edmund Bertram and Mr K would be tied for my favorite Male lead character; i however find myself drawn to the fanfiction spinoffs/sequels/variations of P&P the most. there are few great sites that offer wonderful stories (and several sites that offer stories that would be rejected by a 5th grade teacher due to grammatical errors!). I love www.dwiggie.com and they have several Emma based stories too, if you are interested smiley

Oh this is on Prime? I haven't seen Emma in quite some time. Now I'm going to have to watch it again to refresh my memory! smiley

@Gina: The fanfiction looks fun. I haven't read much of it myself, but maybe now is the time?

some are pretty short, others take a modern twist...same basic plot but modern day...others are more sequels and introduce new characters and such. just make sure you use the search function to look at completed stories..nothing like reading for an hour only to find out the author gave up halfway thru!! smiley

I'll have to add this to my amazon prime playlist... smiley It's always interesting when there's the character type of villain that we're made to love in the end. smiley

there are some fun twists in a few of the P&P stories where Whickem gets whats coming to him...but also stories that revolve around Caroline Bingley and turning her into a "better" person smiley I am sure there are Amazon lists for JA Fan Fiction!!!

I've actually never liked Emma as a heroine until the 2009 adaptation. I love her now! There's something about Romola Garai's Emma that makes her more bearable than her previous incarnations and the novel - she's insufferable in the novel! But hilarious.

My favourite Austen hero is Captain Wentworth. Of course, that may well be because my favourite Austen novel is Persuasion and he was played by the yummy Rupert Penry-Jones. (I'm a bit shallow, okay?) But Mr Knightley is a very close second.

I re-watched the 2009 adaption Saturday & stayed up till about 2am doing so lol! Loved every minute of it tho! I realized this time watching how alike our fathers are. And I'm also like Trish in Persuasion being my all time favorite. But I certainly think Knightly is a well rounded fellow! He's smart, sensible and wants the best for all he knows. He also has a way of just being genuine that I prefer in people fictional or otherwise. smiley

I have not watched Persuasion, so I'll have to get on that.

Has anyone watched the new? Love and Friendship, which I think is based on Jane Austen's earliest work? I'm definitely curious about it.

haven't seen either, but they are both on my list!!! smiley

I LOVE Jane Austen movies! We have a local area email free list group network where people can offer items they own for free and arrange to meet up, and also one where where people can sell items they own for a reduced price to others. When someone offered a whole DVD set of the BBC Jane Austen videos that includes Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Pride and Prejudice for $5.00, I jumped on it. My absolute favorite is Pride and Prejudice and I love Colin Firth as Mr. Darcey. This was a long version mini series when it came on TV several years ago. There has been a much shorter remake starring Dame Judy Dench, Keira Knightley, and James Sutherland. I didn't like that version very much when it first came out, but I do now. Still, it can't trump the original long mini series with Colin Firth.

I DID see Love and Friendship with Kate Beckinsale and enjoyed it. She plays Lady Susan Vernon, a lady who exploits every opportunity and everybody who comes her way in order to financially secure her future. I had first downloaded this work as an e-book onto my tablet and read it. It's written in a diary/journal entry type format.

Kate Beckinsale also starred in one of the versions of Emma. I enjoy her in anything.

@Debra: That DVD set sounds like a good deal!

did you know there is an off-broadway musical version of P&P??? I am totally in love with the idea of a favorite story and a favorite hobby (singing, tho i am typically off key!) mashing up into one! smiley

@Debra: what an AWESOME deal of that DVD set!!! I'm green... smiley

@Gina: at first my skim read saw PB&J and mash up... I was like "I hate when that happens to my PB&J, too... hahaha

@ Marisa and @ Shawna - I don't know what this set retailed for, but I would have paid more for it used. I could watch them over and over, and I still watch them on TV over and over when they come on again.

Of course, this is all from a person who absolutely loved The Sound of Music (Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer) movie, and the original Parent Trap movie (Haley Mills, Brian Keith, & Maureen O'Hara when I was growing up. No matter how many times I've seen them, I will always watch them again and again when they come no TV.

@Debra: My hubby and I on our first date... spent the day at a local park... then ended it cooking a dinner together and renting "The Sound Of Music" to watch together. smiley It was a great and long first date!!! smiley LoL
