Happy thanksgiving to everybody in the States !!!

What are your traditions surrounding Thanksgiving ? .... What do you serve ? is it traditional or different from the general fare ? Are any of you vegetarians that celebrate .... if you are what do you serve ? smiley

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! smiley

I try to have my family members make a list of 10 things they're grateful for this year, then we pass it to the person next to us at the table & they read it. Then we say a blessing & eat! smiley

I was so surprised the first time we spent Thanksgiving at my in-laws, as they had a meal just like any other Sunday meal... Traditionally, on my mother's side, we go all out for the Thanksgiving & Christmas meals - something which I have tried to continue. First there's the appetizers - usually cheese & crackers, deviled eggs & sometimes stuffed celery. Some years I'll make a special salad, and some years I'll offer a soup to start (like pumpkin or butternut squash soup). Then there's the main meal with the big bird (turkey for most, for me it's usually a cornish hen or chicken as I'm allergic to turkey), the amazing jam-packed stuffing with all sorts of goodies (chopped apples, pecans, raisins, dried cranberries, sauteed onion, etc.), a candied yam dish that's covered with marshmallows, peas & pearl onions, roasted carrots, asparagus or green beans almondine, squash, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes & gravy. Several hours later is dessert with coffee or tea. We'll have things like Thanksgiving cake (my maternal grandmother's recipe), pecan-pumpkin pie (a creation of mine that combines the two in one pie), fruit pies (blueberry &/or apple are usually the norm) and/or lemon or chocolate torte. Now that it's just the four of us, rather than a big crowd for the holidays (everyone's too far away), I've had to scale back a lot. We usually take a poll on what to have each year, and I make enough so we have 1 or 2 additional meals (we love leftovers!). This year we're eating out - I'll miss the leftovers...

A very Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates. Tomorrow, I waddle away from the table. Hope you all have a wonderful turkey day and thank you Susan. No vegetarians in my family and it is traditional fare. Turkey and gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, veggies, green bean casserole, mac and cheese, stuffing, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes. Then there's dessert, apple pie, dutch apple pie and pumpkin pie. Just typing this down and I'm getting sick. smiley

Lizanne, I thought we had a lot of food but you have us beat. Enjoy!!

I'm in Australia but I wanted to wish everyone in the US a very happy Thanksgiving smiley

Our Thanksgivings vary based on who is where since we don't live close to our extended family and mys sisters and I have weird work schedules. This year we'll be having ham for Thanksgiving linner (between lunch and dinner) becuase my middle sister will be at her boyfriend's house in Mobile this year. Friday, my mom, my older sister, our friends and I will all go Black Friday shopping. My middle sister and her boyfriend will be able to come up from Tuscaloosa on Sunday so we'll have our turkey and all the trimmings then. We'll probably have some friends over too. One of the stranger dishes that we have to have for Thanksgiving is Macaroni salad with turkey dressing. One of my dad's family members goofed at a long ago Thanksgiving dinner and accidentally poured gravy on his turkey but it turned out so well that now they all purposefully put gravy on their macaroni salad.

Happy Thanksgiving!
1. Brusselsprouts are a must at my table.
2. Yams are a no-no.
3. We have started off the Christmas season with 'BlackAdders' Christmas Carol'
4. Relax

My hubby is a holiday humbug, so we don't ever do much. Although I will confess that I believe many in America have wandered away from the meaning of the holidays so I don't feel very celebratory much of the time. We "joke" around my house how Thanksgiving has become American Gluttony day and now with the stores opening on Thanksgiving itself the gluttony easily extends to commercial gluttony. I am an excellent cook, so we never have simple meals, but we won't make an excessive amount that we can't eat. Because of work schedules and college assignments that are due we will spend the time at home and not visiting our families.

I hope everyone had a great day! It was the first time I had Thanksgiving with my parents and sister since I went off to college (over 10 years ago), so it was a special time. My aunt, uncle and cousins live in town as well, so they came too. My mom and I cooked together, for the first time, and everything went deliciously, except the gravy which was not much of a success. But I'm confident we'll get it next year!

Sounds like a fun time Marisa ... I don't think it matters what the gravy was like as long as you have fun and family smiley

If the only thing that didn't turn out was the gravy, ya'll did great
