My dog just went blind

Do any of you have blind dogs? My sweet pug, Emma, who is just 6 years old has just went blind. The vet says it is Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS). It happened so suddenly it's going to take us a while to get adjusted. Emma is adjusting better than we are, she seems happy and is getting around quite well. I think it helps that she has her sisters as I've noticed her following them around. She use to be our little leader (bossy bottom) as my husband called her. I guess he'll have to think of a new nickname for her. I need any advice and support you can give me. Thanks in advance for your help.

So sorry to hear about your Emma. Make sure you give her lots of love.

Wow Rachel... that's crazy. I know we went to the vet for their annual in late August, I'm supposed to bring my boy back at 6 months for a recheck on his eyes because they said he has cataracts and since he's never had them before if it progresses to fast, he could go blind. But I think I understand there is a surgery if it's got before it spreads over more than 30% I think he's about 12% now. I think he's had it longer than that... they just didn't notice at his last couple appointments because they were so rushed and basically gave him shots and said goodbye. He has been barking at normal things from a distance for about 2-3 years now... enough that I told hubby I thought I saw a slight glaze over his eyes and that he might not being seeing as well. So, as long as he stays below 25% he's ok. He will just see kind of blurry. She said under that, it's not worth the risk for the sight loss. I hope you and Emma both find a new comfortable place with it quickly. Be encouraged though, they are much more resilient than we give them credit for and with the fact that smell is actually their #1 sense and if you don't move to a new place... She will probably be a lot more adjusted very quickly once she fully relies on that sense. smiley {{{huuggggs}}}

Thanks for the hugs and advice. She seems to be adjusting very well. She even goes up and down the stairs without difficulty. She is ,for the most part, her fun playful self. We'll adjust to it, it will take up longer than it's taken her.
