Taking Photos in Dark Areas

With proms coming up, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to take photos in a darkened area while the couples do the grand march? My camera doesn't have any settings for dark areas and my flash won't be strong enough to reach across the gym? Any suggestions?

Flash on cameras will never be strong enough ... they usually have about a 5 or 6 foot reach at best .... you would have to have a separate flash unit and be set up where you wouldn't disturb anybody with the bright light....you could try for a spot where there is a lighter background and then tweak the photos in photoshop or whatever software you have .... they will be softer though and not sharp or opt for taking only a couple of people in each shot so you can get closer to them.

Some point and shoot cameras have a night setting where it automatically adjusts the lighting (though the photos will turn out grainy). But Susan is right, you would need enough external light to compensate for a small flash.
