Tag Shape 18 - Layered

I downloaded this today and found that I'm having some trouble with the layers, particularly the stripes layer. It seems that the top tabbed portion of the tag where the stripes cross, that is, layer 3 is clipped with supposedly locked transparent pixels as indicated by the icon, but still the tabbed portion and the background are both covered in stripes.

It does not appear that the background pixels are locked as the layers are currently situated in this file. I have tried removing/re-adding the locking pixels icon on the different layers which has no apparent effect, then releasing the clipping which helps if I move layer 3 upward. Still it is awkward and does not fully address the problem.

In addition, there is a duplicate paper folds 006 canvas layer that seems to play no additive effect on the design. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Cathy! I'm not sure what the problem is that you're having. All the things you are saying are true, but shouldn't be causing a problem. Are you trying to recolor the stripes?

I duplicated the textured layer because I wanted more texture. You are free to do as you like.

Hi Marisa, thanks for responding and pointing out that neat tip on adding extra texture. Great idea...I learned something new!

The problem I have is as follows. I find that the stripes on the tabbed portion covers the background pixels such that the tabbed portion is not distinct from the background layer. My concern is that the tabbed portion is partially hidden or behind the stripes instead of in the forefront as it should be so that the tag shape remains intact. I find myself doing much rearranging of the layers and not satisfactorily getting the tag shape components to function properly in the forefront without affecting the transparent pixels in the background whether I'm recoloring any of the tag components or the background of the tag. I appreciate your checking this out.

Hi Cathy. You'll need to show me a screenshot of what you're describing, and here's an image of the original, if you've lost what it looked like initially. "Layer 0" is the main tag shape, and the stripes are clipped to it so that they don't go beyond the edges of the tag.

Thanks Marisa for your screenshot and explanation. I reopened the PSD file again and recreated the steps previously done in an attempt to illustrate the problem to take a snapshot to send to you (which by the way I cannot figure how I could upload it here as I've tried that in the past for a different issue to no avail since there seems to be no upload button and copy/paste doesn't work either for a non-url image file).

Well anyway, I just discovered something that I didn't realize until now. When I tried to add a background image or color to the original file making no other adjustments, immediately the stripes layer 3 becomes unclipped causing the stripes to cover not only the entire tabbed portion as intended but also the pixelated background which should not be affected so as to retain the tag shape. I realized the automatic clipping release of layer 3 seems to be the culprit. I found that once I moved my intended background layer(s) to the level or position I want, then I lastly proceeded (as it was meant in the original file) to reclip layer 3 as a final step to completing my adapted version of your file.

Now that I recognize that this was the problem, all layers function as expected. Thank you for your time and effort in helping me to resolve this issue.

Great! See here for directions to share an image.

Thanks Marisa for the directions link for sharing an image. I don't know how I missed that! smiley
