About Me
New to Digital Scrapbooking, just started in 2019, want to make a record of family stories before my mother passes away. My dad died in 2016. I currently live in Canada but was born and raised in New Zealand, and emigrated to Canada upon marrying my Canadian spouse. Home Country - lets see - New Zealand or Canada? Which to choose? Most of my photos will be from NZ, but any pics of my son will be from Canada. MY IP Address will say that I am in Canada which is fine. My mother and sister are still back in NZ so I will make my home country as NZ for now. For Facebook, I dont check it every day - I am not addicted to FB, and I use a different name for privacy. My image is myself as a child - aged about 2 or 3 years old

I used to work for Telecom NZ way back in the day - some 30 years ago now. In 1990 Telecom NZ, which used to be a state own entity, was sold off to an American conglomerate. Prior to 1990, Telecom NZ was an overblown government entity, overstaffed, slow to do their jobs etc etc.
Also NZ was still using copper cables for telephones and there was no internet to speak of. Over the next 3 years (1990-1993) the staffing numbers were severely cut. If I remember my numbers correctly I think the staff numbers were "pruned" from 25,000 down to less than 10,000. Naturally there were protests by the staff members.
I survived the first 2 rounds of cuts, but I didnt want to take a chance with a third round. And the fact that I was not liking the job meant that I really did not want to stay. I was told about a "severance swap" where if one wanted to leave, one could ask for severance, and your position would be taken over by someone who would otherwise have been cut and now could be "saved". Starting from the day I requested a severance swap to the day I was released, was less than 3 months, which makes me think that I probably was going to be cut in the next round.
Soon after I left NZ in 2000, Telecom NZ changed their name to SPARX NZ. Pretty much the whole country is now on broadband for the internet and fibre optics for the phone service. There may be some remote rural areas that either use satellite or are still using dialup.
As for the building I used to work in. That is no longer a Telecom Building. It is now the BDO building. BDO is an Accounting firm.
This LO was made for the November 2020 Spotlight for which we had to use the Work Day Bundle!!

Great page, Robynne!
Iwonder how many other Telco workers feel the same as you? I'm having trouble with 1 in Sydney right now. I ilike your LO too.
