About Me
I am happily retired and enjoying life with my DH Jerry. We have a wonderful daughter, SIL, and two of the world's greatest grandchildren. I enjoy photography, digital scrapping, genealogy, and singing in the choir.
Description
Continuing our tour, we reach Christiansted on the north coast, established in 1733 by Denmark. Historic buildings include the Scale House, with its large scale for weighing barrels of sugar, molasses, and rum for export. Plantation owners then paid their taxes at the Customs House with its wide stairway. On the waterfront is Fort Chrstiansvaern, dating to 1749; it protected the island against pirates and slave uprisings. Sharon checks out the prison cell. The cannons reached beyond Long’s Reef that protects the bay. The nearby Steeple Building was built in 1753 as St. Croix’s first Lutheran church, later used as a bakery, hospital and school.
