Description
June 20-21, 2014 After purchasing a gift certificate to Wings-a-Blazing at an auction last fall, we finally get to Hermann for our first visit. Driving along scenic winding roads, we stop just outside of Hermann at Adam Puchta Winery, established in 1855. The wines we try are very good, and we buy some. Then we drive into town, find a camping spot at the city park next to a creek, and head to the restaurant to try the wings and other specialties. Tasty! After dinner, we check out the town, crossing the railroad tracks and walking along the Missouri riverfront. The first German settlers came to Hermann by riverboat in 1837, with the railroad arriving in 1855. The 1898 Gasconade County courthouse is the only one in the country paid for with private funds. The next morning, we tour the Stone Hill Winery, begun in 1847 but shut down from Prohibition until the 1960s. The underground cellars are huge, and old equipment is displayed.
