Description
Our Panoramic Drive around St. Croix starts at the port of Fredericksted on the west end of the island. As we head through the rainforest on Mahogany Road, we pass mahogany trees and the Montpellier Domino Club, infamous for its drinking pigs. We stop at a giant baobob tree with its large hanging fruits. At another stop, we see yellow Ginger Thomas flowers and a new golf club housing development in a lush valley. Along the way are vestiges of the 18th and 19th century sugar plantations. There are the remains of windmill-powered sugar cane mills and tall smokestakes from the factories where the cane juice was boiled down to make sugar and molasses. The last plantation ceased operations shortly after the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million dollars in 1917. Part of our drive follows lovely beaches and sheltering bays.
