Choosing which layouts to comment on

So . . . I'm curious. How do you choose which layouts to comment on? I was just scrolling through a challenge gallery after posting my layout, and was suprised to see that some layouts that had been posted at the beginning of the month didn't have a single comment. It got me wondering . . . do you just comment on the layouts that catch your eye? do you comment on layouts by particular people? do you comment on layouts added to a particular challenge before or after yours? or does your commenting depend on how much time you have just then? Does digitalscrapbook.com have any particular "commenting etiquette"? Do you respond to comments made on your own layouts? Just curious to see what the rest of the community thinks smiley

I comment on something that "strikes" me that I really like or is my style.

I need to start commenting more. I am always so busy making layouts and uploading and then copy and pasting to forums to browse. If I see a layout that really catches my eye then I will try to at least "LOVE IT". I think you just comment however you feel. I think some layouts get no comments because they get lost in the shuffle and people don't see them. If there happens to be a lot of people uploading layouts when you add yours they tend to get lumped together. I usually check out the challenge layouts more because I do all the challenges. As for responding to your own layout comments, I once and awhile will say thanks, especially if there's more than usual comments. I always read all the comments I get but I feel like responding all the time would be repetitive. I hope at this point everyone here knows I'm thankful to every comment I get.

I comment on layouts that catch my eye.

I usually comment on every layout that is entered in a challenge but sometimes I miss some - this month I let myself get behind.

After that I comment on layouts that I really like or that the thumbnails catch my attention - I mean if a layout being a 2 inch square on my monitor catches my eye then there must be something great about it right?

When I started digiscrapping, you wouldn't get notifications from layouts you commented on - so to say "thank you" to someone who commented, you'd go comment on one of their layouts. On the site I was on back then (it doesn't exist anymore), it was also considered proper etiquette to leave a comment for the previous 5 scrappers who had posted layouts (as well as layouts in whatever challenge you were doing). It didn't always happen, but it was kind of nice to know you'd get a few comments even if your layouts weren't the amazingly eye-catching ones smiley . I know that's no longer expected, but I thought it was a pretty good habit and I try to keep it up (but then, I'm not nearly so prolific a scrapper as many on here!!) But hey, I know a comment can make my day, so I try to spread the love smiley .

When DigitalScrapbook.com first started out, I tried to comment on almost every layout. But the site has grown too big for that. Now I only comment on layouts that catch my fancy, and layouts that used my kits/bundles - those layouts often catch my eye when checking up on the comments on my kits/bundles...

Your gallery etiquette sounds good Teddy. Maybe we should try to do something like that here too!

Gallery commenting is definitely lacking on my part. I usually try to heart layouts a couple of times a week, and comment on ones that really stand out to me. Hopefully as I have more time in the winter months, I will share the layout love more than I do now!

I've created a feature request for creating a prompt to encourage people to leave comments in the gallery.

Anyone have other thoughts on how to generate comments?

Well when I used to sell on Etsy, they had groups for sellers that had "games" to help each gain more views and thus more buyers. A popular "game" was similar to what Teddy said above, you heart the 5 (or 10) products above you in the thread. Another popular "game" was an A.B.C. game, where the first person would post something that started with A, the next B, so on. You would then have to like all the products on the person above you first page of listings. Obviously, these would have to be tweaked to translate to scrapbooking, but maybe we could do something like that. I don't know, just a thought.

The strangest thing for me is whenever I'm really proud of a layout and I think It's going to get a ton of views/comments, it never does. It's always the LO's that I don't expect. Just thought this was weird.

@Melanie, I agree with that last part! I feel the same way!

I remember "gallery love" games too for scrapbooking too . . . at the beginning of the month you'd list the number of comments you're starting with and then at the end of the month you'd compare your number and see who did the most commenting. I wonder if something like that could be tweaked with community points. Maybe offer a prize for some random comments too? Make it a gallery love madness month kind of like our Summer Layout Madness smiley

Another "game" I remember was people posting the link to a layout they liked that was overlooked, and the next person would comment on that one and post a new link.

I've always wondered if the time of day that I post makes a different in the number of comments I get (I'm west, so when I'm posting late at night, it's even later for most people). But mostly I've never figured out a rhyme or reason to why some layouts get comments and others don't lol.

I'm like Melo - there's so many layouts posted here these days that I pretty much only comment on the ones that speak to me at first glance, so to speak (it may be the way it's laid out &/or the colors or supplies used). I just don't have time to leave comments for every layout posted.

I know that some forums create a praise team by recruiting members to commit to commenting on a set quota of layouts, be it weekly or monthly, but personally, I never liked getting comments that way; they just didn't feel genuine. I have always commented on layouts that catch my eye in some way, be it from a blog post, or newsletter post or,when I had the time, from browsing a gallery. Also, in the past, when I had more time to give to it, I would make a point of searching the albums/galleries of the individuals who left a comment for me. I'd find something in their collection on which to comment ( sort of a return of favor, I guess).

Is there a way to search in the DigitalScrapbook.com gallery specifically for layouts that don't have comments? I tried using a reverse sort on the "all time most popular" option, but that didn't seem to work.

I don't think so. I think you just have to happen across them. Sometimes I do a search using the random feature and get layouts I haven't seen before but that isn't just ones that don't have comments.

@Marisa & @Kaleena...I was just going through this thread and I agree with all all one level or the other.
With particular reference to Teddy's last post, it would be something, great in fact, if there were buttons below each of the LOs posted in the gallery - one each for views, comments & hearts - giving the number of times a particular LO has been viewed, commented on or hearted. Then, to spread the love around, one can see if a LO has none of anything or lacks in something, we can do the needful, if so inclined.
I for one would love to have this feature.
