Does anyone know how to make a pattern in Illustrator?

Hello, I hardly know Illustrator, and the designers tell me that it is better to create patterns in illustrator than it is in Photoshop. I'd like to try my hand in creating Illustrator patterns. Anyone know how to explain it to me?

Thank you. smiley

Thank you, Judy! I did check out a tutorial on there but it was so difficult to comprehend. I was hoping if someone here could have simple instructions. I really appreciate you taking the time. smiley

Sharon, I did a Google search for "Create Patterns in Adobe Illustrator", and here are a few of the links it came up with:

There are also lots of tutorials on this site:

I don't have Illustrator, but hopefully something here will help you.

Also, I know that Holly Wolf has some knowledge about Illustrator, so maybe you could contact her? I'm sure she would be able to point you in the right direction.

Oooooooh Thank you, Robyn. I'll have to check these links out. Thank you again. smiley

Making a pattern in illustrator is pretty easy, let me know if you have any questions after watching the youtube videos.

Thank you, Marisa! smiley

Create the shapes you want to be part of your pattern repeat, group them if you need to in order to keep a layered element together, select all the paths, then choose Object>Pattern>Make... That'll put you into the pattern editor, and you can choose how you want the pattern to repeat, adjust the position of your objects, and adjust the size of the pattern tile. Once you're done, click the Done button. Your new pattern will appear in the Swatches panel, ready to be applied as a fill to whatever path you choose.

Oh thank you so much, Holly. You make it sound so easy. I'll be giving it a try.

Illustrator is fantastic for patterns, because you have the option to make the pattern repeat not form an exact grid, which makes most of them look much more complex. You can make it do brick by row and have it move by fifths, quarters, thirds, and halves, or brick by column the same way...or you can do hex patterns (great for interlocking hexagons, triangles, or a repeating snowflake). The one caveat is that there can be a graphical glitch along the tile edges if you scale a repeating pattern, so make the tile itself at the size you want it rather than scaling afterwards.

Thank you, Holly! I just love your patterns that you created over at the designer challenge. Did you teach yourself? If you did, my hat is off to you.

I watched an online course over at Skillshare taught by a guy named Brad Woodard--actually a series of 4 courses that taught the basics of Illustrator. He went through every tool and talked/showed how to use them and what options you have with them--well worth the 4 hours or so for me, because I'd tried to learn Illustrator a few times and it's just so different from Photoshop that I hadn't learned much by myself. The name of the series is Fundamentals of Illustrator.

There are lots of other great classes there, too (especially those on Illustrator and Photoshop, but I've also seen classes on font design, font pairing, calligraphy, watercolor painting, surface pattern design, mathematics, business, marketing, etc.) and they offer a scholarship program for people who want to learn but can't afford the membership. It's normally $12 a month or $96 annually, but I've got a promo link that will get your first 3 months for $0.99 if anyone's interested:

Thank you so much, Holly! smiley Your link is useful.

here are some good (&free) illustrator classes for scrapbookers aswell: http://illustratoring.com I know she did something on patterns too. I just wanted to add it to the list, because I really like her classes!

Oh thank you Anika, I'll have to check these classes out. Wow. Thank you, thank you.

Sharon, when I first learned how to make patterns in illustrator I learned it from Bonnie Christine. Her class is not only teaching how to work with illustrator but also how to create a coherent pattern and pattern collection. So definitely check this out. She teaches the illustrator from scratch which is very helpful.

Thank you so much, Elif for your recommendation. I will look her up right now. Thank you again! smiley
